Duties

  • Serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property.
  • Responds to aircraft, fire, rescue, brush, forest, vehicle and structural fires, hazardous material spills and releases and accomplishes containment and decontamination; confined space/heavy technical rescue.
  • Conducts fire prevention inspections.
  • Provides basic and intermediate life support treatment to patients within the pre-hospital environment, performing such duties as patient assessment and intervention.
  • Performs CPR and advanced airways techniques.
  • Performs maintenance tasks on firefighting and EMS apparatus, equipment and facilities.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the employee to work 72 hours per week/144 biweekly hours and may be subject to recall after normal tour of duty in cases of emergencies.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position requires a physical agility test.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires the employee to wear uniform.
  • This position is a non-combat essential position. Incumbent may be ineligible from participating in the Ready Reserve.
  • This position will require approval to practice as an EMT-Intermediate or higher by the agency Operational Medical Doctor (OMD) after person is onboarded.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 100 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: responding to alarms and combats fires utilizing knowledge of the proper firefighting and rescue techniques; 2) containing and controlling toxic, hazardous and/or dangerous materials; and 3) providing basic and or intermediate life support treatment to patients (duties such as patient assessment, cardiac monitoring, treatment of fractures/dislocations etc. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Selective Placement Factor: This position requires you to possess and maintain all of the following Department of Defense, International Fire Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) equivalent certifications: (Please note: All certifications must be uploaded at time of application):

- Firefighter
- Firefighter II
- Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations OR Technician
- State of Virginia or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate or higher Certification Card indicating a future expiration date

- This position requires Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification

Also required are: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
