In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-04: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Climbing ladders and/or working at elevated heights and 2) Assisting with or moving people who are mobility impaired. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).
OR
Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
GS-05: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting with controlling and extinguishing fires, operating hose lines, making forced entries, or ventilating structures 2) Assisting in rescue operations including administering first aid to injured victim and 3) Using a variety of equipment for communication, rescue, and medical attention (i.e., telephone and radios, extrication tools, ropes, medical tools, etc.).This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
GS-07: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience: 1) Controlling and extinguishing fires, operating hose lines, makes forced entries, ventilates structures; 2) Performing or assisting in rescue operations including administering first aid to injured victims; 3) Driving and operating firefighting apparatus of significant complexity; e.g., pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and crash rescue trucks; and 4) Performing as an Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic. GS-08: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Controlling and extinguishing fires, operating hose lines, makes forced entries, ventilates structures; 2) Performing or assisting in rescue operations including administering first aid to injured victims; 3) Driving and operating firefighting apparatus of significant complexity; e.g., pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and/or crash rescue trucks; 4) Assisting in hazardous materials control and response; and 5) performing as an Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
GS-09: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Controlling and extinguishing fires, operating hose lines, makes forced entries, ventilates structures; 2) Performing rescue operations; 3) Driving and operating firefighting apparatus of significant complexity; e.g., pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and/or crash rescue trucks; 4) Employing hazard materials spilled or release mitigation; 5) Maintaining care of emergency specialized equipment; and 6) Performing as an Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
Selective placement factors: This position has the selective placement factors that require the incumbent must possess and maintain an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Paramedic license from the State of Illinois or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. These certifications must have been awarded by the DoD, IFSAC, or Pro-Board accredited training to meet the requirements. If you do not possess all of the above certifications, you will be rated ineligible. (All of the required certifications listed, MUST be submitted with your application package).
At the GS-06 grade level, this position requires you to possess the following certifications: Fire Fighter I, Fire Fighter II, Apparatus Driver Operator-Pumper, Apparatus Driver Operator-Aerial, Hazmat Operations issued by one of the following: Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/ProBoard.
