In order to qualify, you must meet the education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in controlling or extinguishing fires; operating fire department equipment; or providing basic life support or assisting intermediate life support or paramedic staff with assessing patient's conditions to administer basic treatment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
GS-08 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in controlling or extinguishing fires; operating fire department equipment; performing fire prevention inspections; assisting with rescue operations; or providing basic life support or assisting intermediate life support or paramedic staff with assessing patient's conditions to administer basic treatment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
GS-09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in controlling or extinguishing fires; operating fire department vehicles and equipment or assisting with the effective positioning of emergency vehicles; performing basic fire inspection to reduce or eliminate potential fire hazards; assisting with rescue operations; controlling hazardous material incidents; or providing basic life support or assessing patient's conditions to administer basic treatment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess the required certificates listed below for the level to which applying for.
Firefighter Certificates:
GS-07 Firefighter Certificates: Applicants must possess and maintain State of California or National Registry (NR) Paramedic license along with American Heart Association (AHA) CPR AND AED certifications. Requiredto obtain and maintain certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System (DoD F&ES), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) certification Firefighter I, Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS), and Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS). (You MUST submit a copy of the certificates to be considered at this level.)
GS-08 Firefighter Certificates: Applicants must possess and maintain State of California or NR Paramedic license along along with AHA CPR AND AED certifications, ACLS, PHTLS or BTLS, and PALS. Requiredto obtain and maintain certified through DoD F&ES, IFSAC, or PRO-Board certification Firefighter I. (You MUST submit a copy of the certificates to be considered at this level.)
GS-09 Firefighter Certificates and EMS: Applicants must possess and maintain State of California or NR Paramedic license along along with AHA CPR AND AED certifications, ACLS, PHTLS or BTLS, and PALS. In addition, applicants must possess and maintain certified through DoD F&ES, IFSAC, or PRO-Board certification Firefighter I & II, Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Awareness/operations, Driver/Operator Pumper/ARFF/Mobile Water Supply (MWS). (You MUST submit a copy of the certificates to be considered at this level.)
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

- Preventative Maintenance
- Vehicle Operation
Time in Grade Requirement GS-07: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
Time in Grade Requirement GS-08: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
