Join Our Team as a Food Service Assistant

The Southern Arizona VA Healthcare Network is looking for dedicated individuals to join the Nutrition and Food Services team as a Food Service Assistant. Your role will be essential in supporting our mission to provide excellent food service to veterans. This position involves working in various areas such as food preparation, dish washing, storage management, and serving, ensuring that all food-related services are delivered efficiently and effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and breakdown of stations with the correct supplies and food items.
  • Portion food items using proper utensils and dishware for standard servings.
  • Select and place correct food items on patient trays considering dietary requirements.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies between prescribed diets and menu items.
  • Prepare and serve meals, handle patient feedback, and assist cooks in food preparation tasks.
  • Engage in food preparation activities such as assembling salads, sandwich fillings, and desserts.
  • Maintain cleanliness across all food service areas, performing heavy-duty cleaning duties as required.

Working Schedule

Shifts are varied, requiring flexibility to work between Sunday and Saturday, 6:00 am - 2:30 pm or 11:30 am - 8:00 pm.

Qualifications

No specific length of training or education is required, but evidence of experience or training in food service is necessary. You must demonstrate capability in responsibilities described in the role. We value both paid and volunteer experiences that highlight relevant skills.

Physical Requirements

The role involves significant physical activity including standing, walking, lifting objects up to 20 pounds independently, and occasionally over 40 pounds with assistance. Work occurs in a kitchen setting with high temperatures and humidity.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Completion of a pre-employment physical and background check.
