In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-04:
General and/or Specialized Experience: Six (6) months of general experience which includes (1) any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with routine technical support in forestry/farming/ranching operations; AND six (6) months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-03 grade level in the Federal service which includes assisting with forest management activities such as tree harvesting, or assisting with wildland fire management practices such as prescribed burning or fire tower operations.

Education: Two years of education above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
GS-05:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting in timber cruises to support forest management activities; or 2) assisting with wildland fire management activities, such as prescribed burning, wildland fire suppression, fire tower operations, and/ or fire standby. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-4. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
GS-06:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting in timber cruises to support forest management activities; and 2) assisting with wildland fire management activities, such as prescribed burning, wildland fire suppression, fire tower operations, and/ or fire standby. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-05).

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, etc.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
GS-07:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Participating in a variety of forest management activities (e.g., timber cruising, timber marking, timber sales, herbicide application, wildlife preservation/protected habitat preservation, and clearing forest roads); 2) assisting with wildland fire management activities, such as prescribed burning, wildland fire suppression, fire tower operations, and/ or fire standby; and 3) using computer systems to record data and/or generate data summaries for use in formulating forest management plans. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, etc.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
GS-08:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Participating in a variety of forest management activities (e.g., timber cruising, timber marking, timber sales, herbicide application, wildlife/protected habitat preservation and clearing forest roads); 2) assisting with wildland fire management activities, such as prescribed burning, wildland fire suppression, fire tower operations, and/ or fire standby; and 3) evaluating forest conditions such as tree volume and growth, disease, and/or wildlife activities; and 4) Assisting with preparation of forest management plans to support program goals/objectives. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-07).
