The primary purpose of these positions is to carry out a variety of project plans in support of the unit recreation program in Region 3.

- Perform and monitor day-to-day recreation maintenance, clean-up, and simple construction projects for sites, reporting issues.
- Monitor the condition and use of trails to report issues.
- Monitor public recreation use areas and report safety issues.
- Provide visitors with information about specific recreation opportunities and activities, such as those at specific sites.
- Explain rules and/or regulations to visitors.
- Ensure deposits of collected fees are made appropriately.
- Monitor wilderness area for use, maintenance and report issues.
Occasional travel - Occasional travel may be required for field work, site visits, training and/or meetings.
Conditions Of Employment

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-4: You must have six months of general experience AND six months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-3 in the Federal service. General experience is defined as one or more of the following: performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding/tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; cleaned tools and equipment; worked in a greenhouse or nursery planting, moving, watering, and tending plants and performed general labor; worked on a landscape or construction crew; other work experience, paid or unpaid, that demonstrates an ability to learn and perform the work of this position. AND six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-3 grade level that is directly related to the work of the position; Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Forestry aid or technician work in recreation such as provided visitors with information and collecting monies; or performed crew based forestry related support work such as recreation, trail or facility maintenance.
OR Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable);
OR an appropriate combination of experience and education above high school as described above. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university and include courses that are related to the occupation of the position.
For the GS-5: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Inspected recreation area clean-up operations and performed safety hazard analysis of public recreation use areas; patrolled wilderness to ensure that areas were operated, used, and maintained in accordance with wilderness management plans; performed site maintenance, including cleanup and naturalizing at widely dispersed sites; gathered, compiled, and reported recreation program data for use in monitoring and assessment activities and summarized data for use in recreation data management systems.
OR Bachelor's degree or four years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable);
OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
This job does not have an education qualification requirement.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications.
You will be evaluated in accordance with the category rating procedure as defined in the USDA Demonstration Project Plan. Applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements established for the position will be placed in the Eligible category. You will be further evaluated against criteria for placement in the Quality category. This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Assessment Questionnaire. Individuals with veterans' preference are listed ahead of applicants who do not have veterans' preference within each category.
