Duties

Major Duties:  Incumbent assigned to one or more specialized activities to include but not limited to the following:  Recreation Grounds Management, MCCS Facilities and Maintenance, Marine R/V Park, and Sound of Freedom Golf Course.  Performs one or more of the following duties:  Uses heavy power mowers, powered tools, adjusts blades, and cleans and oils mowers; cuts trees, using ax or chain saw.  Digs ditches and trenches with pick and shovel where dirt is hard and compact and does grading and sloping.  Occasionally and for short periods of time, breaks up pavement with jackhammer, mixes and pours concrete, asphalt, and hot mix, fills and levels holes in damaged roads. Maintaining condition of the golf course to include mowing, grass trimming, sand raking, and other outside duties.

Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner.  Takes action to solve problems quickly.  Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise.  Adheres to safety regulations and standards.  Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor.  Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

Performs other related duties as required.

EVALUATIONS:

Qualifications

Skills and Knowledge:  Ability to operate, control, and clean heavy power equipment and to work safely with heavy tools.  Ability to provide continual care and attention both to avoid accidents and to finish the work properly.  Skill in performing routine operator maintenance and adjusting the cutting g height of blades on power mowers.  Prior job experience or on-the-job training is normally required to gain this ability.  Ability to complete assignments involving several tasks or processes which require remembering directions, sequences, etc.

Responsibility:  For most assignments, the supervisor does not give detailed instructions or provide continual supervision except during special assignments with specified timeframes for accomplishment.  The incumbent is responsible for completing work after getting initial oral or written instructions.  Ability to use appropriate equipment or safety devices when lifting and moving very heavy objects.  Continual care is required due to the nature of the work, the type of equipment used.  Supervisor checks work on a random basis for timeliness, work practices, and compliance with instructions.   

Physical Effort:  Exerts very heavy physical effort in doing such tasks as frequently lifting and moving objects, running power mowers on grades or pushing heavy loads of dirt, etc.  Lifts and carries objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance.

Working Conditions:  Work is performed both inside and outside.  Subject to drafts, noise, and varying temperatures.  Exposed to weather and temperature extremes outside, as well as high noise levels, vibrations, and jolts from tractor and towed equipment.  Exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and fumes.  Must follow safety practices and wear issued safety equipment.
