Conditions of employment
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position requires temporary duty (TDY) travel up to 75% of the time.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

- If selected at WG-10, you must be willing to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License and 4G Welding Certification must be acquired within 24 months of start date.
- Within first 6 months of hire employee must acquire and maintain USACE crane and rigging certification for gantry cranes and the maintenance sections mobile hydraulic cranes, MVK forklift, telehandler, skid steer, and aerial boom lift.
- Position may be designated Mission Essential.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: If selected at WG-10 level, the incumbent must be willing to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 24 months from the date of hire. (The exact time frame is at management discretion.)

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-10: Ability to do the work of a(n)General Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision which includes, assisting in performing structural repair and fabrication of steel, concrete, masonry, wood, gates, valves, piping systems using welding and construction techniques; and maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment associated with locks, dams, flood control structures, hydraulic systems, pumps, and gearboxes.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-11: Ability to do the work of a(n)General Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision which includes, performing structural repairs and fabrication of steel, concrete, masonry, wood, gates, valves, and piping systems using welding and construction techniques; maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment associated with locks, dams, flood control structures, hydraulic system, pumps, and gear boxes; and operating heavy equipment and maintenance machinery, including cranes, forklifts, generators, welding equipment, boats, barges, and tractors.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
- Physical Effort: Work normally requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Carries objects weighing up to 30 pounds for short distance on an occasional basis. All major duties of the position performed in locations where extensive standing, stooping, stretching, climbing and lifting are not necessary to effectively accomplish the tasks. Uses normal coordination of eyes, hands, legs and body in installing,repairing, operating, or testing equipment in locations easily accessible such as lockwalls,machinery recesses, lock chambers maintenance shops and yards. Occasionally climbs short ladders (i.e., to gain access to crane cab and machinery recess, etc.). Occasionally works from scaffolding and suspended stages. Directs lower graded employees to assist and to accomplish heavy lifting and carrying.
- Working Conditions: Works inside and outside during the day or night, subject to inclement weather, on high structures usually over water, which is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high voltage electrical equipment on scaffolds and from slings. Occasionally will work behind bulkheads below the water level. Incumbent is also subject to falls, drowning, injury or discomfort and when inside, exposure to drafts, changing temperatures, and loud noises. Uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing. Working conditions have been considered in the evaluation of the job and environmental differential pay is not warranted for duties performed. Is normally assigned to the day shift, but is subject to call during other shifts in case of extreme emergency or other conditions requiring round-the-clock repair activities to restore lock to operational status.
