Summary

The purpose of this position is to provide assistance in planning, organization, guidance and supervision necessary for the efficient maintenance of a golf course and ancillary practice area. The golf course and practice areas operate throughout the year.

Duties

Responsible for the playing surface of the golf course, including all tees, greens, fairways, roughs, lakes surrounding areas; landscaping; drainage; irrigation ornamentals; equipment requirements; fertilizers, seed, sand, top-dressing material, all chemicals; structures (buildings, fences, bridges, materials, etc. directly affecting golf play); personnel, materials and associated records for course maintenance.

Layout and direct construction, renovation, cultivation, mowing, watering and maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, surrounding areas and appurtenances at an acceptable standard of golf course play; and maintenance of turf, plants, shrubs and trees. Plans and submits recommendations for improvements in the physical layout of the course. Maintains a nursery to support the golf course. Ensures appropriate landscaping, maintenance and cleanliness of ground area and parking lot surrounding Golf Pro Shop and clubhouse; maintenance and cleanliness of restrooms and shelters on course.

Prepares personnel and maintenance quarterly and annual operating budgets. Determines the amount, quality and cost of labor, materials and equipment required for optimum accomplishment of assigned mission, but limited to a cost below anticipated golf course income. Orders supplies and materials within budgetary restrictions. Contacts firms to obtain price and other information regarding purchase of equipment, accessories, parts, fertilizer pesticides, seed, sand and gravel, etc., recommends acquisition of item sought, maintains, improves, expands or enhances the golf course. Recommends purchase, survey and repair or modification of equipment used. Prepares purchases requests, bid specifications and letters, monthly call sheets and other related documents.

Develops and fully implements all Safety and Occupational Health, Fire Prevention, Environmental and Industrial Hygiene requirements. Implements fully a "Right to Know" program and insures the Hazard Communication materials such as the Authorized User List and Material Safety Data sheets (MSDS) are up to date. Ensures that proper storage of all chemicals in accordance with all Environmental Protection Agency and NAVFAC directives. Conducts continuous training program in safety and use of all equipment, materials and chemicals and supervises the mixing of all chemicals in accordance with applicable procedures and directives.

Ensures employees are furnished with appropriate personal protective equipment and are instructed on proper use. Checks employees continually to ensure equipment is used and safety procedures are adhered to. Investigates mishaps and accurately prepares accident and mishap reports. Inspects building and grounds on a continual basis noting safety deficiencies and initiating prompt corrective actions.

Operates a complete vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance facility. Maintains accurate records of equipment repairs and preventive maintenance schedules.

Plans and supervises construction of major improvement projects, such as drainage of large areas, bridge and cart path construction, rebuilding of greens and tees, sodding and/or seeding of substandard areas, irrigation and pumping station installation, etc. Recommends appropriate contractors and conducts research as necessary to secure bids. Responsible for drafting specifications needed.

  • Must either possess or have ability to earn (within 6 month of employment) a Commonwealth of Virginia registered Technician permit and Pesticide Applicators License in the appropriate categories.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate must possess:

A Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy or related subject pertaining to the development of turf-grasses is strongly preferred, but may be substituted by a combination of education, training and documented applicable work experience of at least five (5) years as a successful head groundskeeper. Must possess a minimum of three (3) years in a supervisory golf course maintenance position.

Knowledge of pest control methods and materials. Must possess certification in use of insecticides, herbicides, fungicides in ornamental and turf, aquatic and right of way pest control.

Must be knowledgeable in drainage control methods; watering and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps and automatic controls; working knowledge of the science treatment of water (hydrology), its properties and distribution, especially with reference to water on the surface of the land and in the soil.

Must have documented knowledge of the production and maintenance of the type of turf's used in golf courses, planting, cultivating, pruning and caring of plants, shrubs and trees, and characteristics of and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners. Working knowledge of irrigation systems and practices and drainage methods, equipment operation, servicing and repair. Must possess in-depth knowledge of the game of golf.
