Summary

The Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for Health Aids in the Nursing Operations Department, Long Beach, CA. The position is responsible for delivering a broad array of health care services throughout the Medical Center, and its various locations that provide in patient care, such as but not limited to the living centers.

Duties

Perform the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide care for a group of patients/residents of varying ages.
  • Determine the differences of both physical and/or psychological effects of aging and physical/mental impairments.
  • Implement facility guidelines for the prevention of pressure ulcers.
  • Maintain general cleanliness of the inpatient/resident's environment including emptying and/or cleaning urinals, bed pans, GU bags, suction bottles, disposing of dirty linen and disposable briefs.
  • Assist as needed with laundering and distributing resident's personal clothing.
  • Utilize specialized equipment such as ceiling lifters, wheelchair movers, steady and/or electric stretchers according to Safe Patient Handling and Movement Policy.
  • Perform a range of clinical support duties, which include taking, recording vital signs and reporting deviations to the RN.
  • Collect, monitor, and/or document resident weight and height.
  • Control the collection of urine, stool, sputum and other specimens for Laboratory analysis.
  • Perform routine tasks that assist in the implementation of leisure and diversional activities and promote meaningful use of time that enhances independence, positive self-esteem and relaxing leisure experiences.
  • Record care of inpatient/resident on appropriate documents: documents condition of inpatient/resident according to facility policy.
  • Assure visual check of all inpatient/residents, provides one-to-one observation as directed for assaultive and/or ill inpatients/residents, and follows facility policy related to suicidal inpatients/residents.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Work Schedule: Various Shifts. May be day or evening shift; can be 8 or 10 hour shift. May have to work on weekends and/or holidays

Qualifications

Basic Requirement: (must be in resume and transcripts) You may qualify at the GS-03 grade level based on your experience as described below.

General Experience: (must be in resume) Six months of general experience; any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
OR

Education: Successful completion of l year of study that included study in medical, health, or related fields.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Working with residents requires regular and recurring bending, lifting (not to exceed 35 pounds), reaching, carrying, stooping, stretching and similar activities.
