Summary

About the Position: This position is located at the Army Health Clinic Presidio, CA. The work covers a range of health promotion and education services from assessment through counseling and effective management of the education and exercise components of the program.
This is a Term position scheduled to last Two Years.

Duties

  • The incumbent will serve as Health Educator for the Wellness Center, California Medical Detachment (CAL MED).
  • Coordinate the Wellness Center health education programs for active duty, beneficiaries, retirees, and civil service personnel.
  • Conduct health assessments, health counseling services, and outcomes measurement.
  • Provide health promotion services in clinics, offices, and communities within the target area with emphasis on a family-centered preventive approach.
  • Train professional and paraprofessional staff to present educational materials and support the Wellness Center health education program.
  • The incumbent may be required to lift and carry weights of up to 25 pounds (manual, data collection forms, etc.) for various meetings.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation (Tier 1).
  • Term employment is subject to a one-year trial period.
  • This is a Term position scheduled to last 2 Years. A term position may be extended to a maximum of 8 years depending upon the needs of management.
  • This is an obligated position. An obligated position is one to which an employee has statutory restoration rights based on an overseas tour.
  • Must possess or obtain a national certification in health and fitness or personal training within 12 months of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunization.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Health Educator
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, such as Kinesiology, Physical Education, Education and Training, Public Health Educator, Health Education Programs. (You must attach a copy of your Transcript).

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with the implementation and coordination of wellness and health promotion programs, providing health consultations, conducting health education sessions, offering fitness courses, and organizing wellness promotion activities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
OR
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Kinesiology, Physical Education, Education and Training, Public Health Educator, Health Education Programs. (You must attach a copy of your Transcript).
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. (You must attach a copy of your Transcript).
