Summary

You will serve as Health Technician (AT Tech) with the VA Puget Sound Health Care System providing care and rehabilitation to those veterans who are post stroke, post amputation or who are suffering from degenerative neurologic diagnoses or other medical conditions. The purpose of the assertive technology technician is to provide the assistive technology in the areas of computer, smart phone, equipment, mobility and adaptive assistive technology interventions to accomplish the service goals.

Duties

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Assembles complex/custom wheelchairs, seating and mobility equipment in a timely manner for delivery to the patients. Make necessary equipment modification with fitting adjustment and prepare goods for delivery to the RCS (Rehabilitation Care Services) Veteran.
  • Fabricates special customized equipment and assembles/adapts self-care equipment.
  • Adjusts temporary orthotics and works collaboratively with RCS therapist for wheelchair trials and definitive prescription, assisting with patients' postural alignment and correction.
  • Interpret and administer RCS therapists' direction in the application of assistive technology devices in order to achieve the goals established for the patient.
  • Receives and suggests courses of action on all incoming wheelchairs for RCS including power wheelchairs, electric scooters, and custom and standard type wheelchairs.
  • Document medical records and enter electronic orders.
  • Perform patient computer set ups for evaluation and assistive technology training.
  • Manage the overall follow up equipment plan for RCS Veterans under the direction of RCS therapists.
  • Provide general equipment consult follow through including product research and exploration or new technologies, obtaining quotes for Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and assistive technology equipment.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30am-4:00pm

Physical Requirements: Works requires moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking (0-2 hours), standing (0-2 hours), crawling (0-1 hours), kneeling (0-1 hours), repeated bending (0-1 hour), near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, mental and emotional stability.

You may qualify based on your experience as described below:

GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: experience with wheelchairs (power or manual), assistive technology, adaptive equipment, experience working with patients in a rehabilitation clinic; experience providing customer service/patient care in a related field.

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one year Graduate education with courses directly related to the work of the position. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)
OR,
Combination of Education and Specialized Experience: An equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total qualification requirements for this grade level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
