Summary

The Health Technician serves as a highly skilled member of the healthcare team, providing both administrative and clinical support in the Emergency Department. The Health Technician is responsible for facilitating the delivery of both acute and non-acute direct patient care while also aiding families, visitors, and employees as necessary.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION***

Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Gathering pertinent data regarding presenting complaints from patients/family members and reports to the Registered Nurse.
  • Obtaining and documenting patient vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respirations, actual weight, oxygen saturation, and postural vital signs.)
  • Initiating cardiac monitoring, admitting/discharging patients from the monitoring system and printing rhythm strips if needed.
  • Performing preventative maintenance, transmitting ECG electronically, and performing cleaning of the ECG machine. Cleaning and maintenance will include all Emergency Department equipment along with assuring machines are in operational order and replenishing all necessary supplies.
  • Performing venipunctures to obtain serum blood samples according to the Emergency Department and laboratory policy.
  • Performing urinary catheter insertions and irrigations according to policy and procedure and discontinuing catheters when ordered.
  • Facilitating patient ambulation and safe transfers, assisting individuals with eating and ambulation, and supporting anxious, medically stable patients as directed by healthcare providers.
  • Initiating and assisting with Basic Life Support (BLS) when required.
  • Responsible for managing telephone communications, which includes answering incoming calls and placing outgoing calls or pages as necessary.
  • Welcoming and assisting patients, their families, visitors, and ambulance personnel upon arrival, directing them to the appropriate treatment areas.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30pm to 8:00am, with weekend rotation

IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-6 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING:

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS: In addition to the meeting the above requirements, you must also meet the following Selective Placement Factors (SPF) for this position. SPFs are skills, knowledge, ability, or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). SPFs are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet them are ineligible for further consideration.

The Selective Placement Factors for this position are (You must submit copies of your current and valid certifications with your application to receive credit):
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Basic or EMT-Paramedic) or Florida State EMT certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to this Health Technician position to be filled. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

Specialized experience for this position includes performing routine venipuncture/blood draws; obtaining and documenting patient vital signs; performing electrocardiograph (ECG) and electrocardiograms (EKGs); aiding in specialized examinations and procedures; documenting and reporting procedures in the medical record. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE.)

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: You must have successfully completed one-half year (9 semester hours) of graduate level education that is directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-6 level. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

Physical Requirements: The Healthcare Technician role necessitates mobility throughout the ED and the medical center as required, which includes activities such as standing, walking, bending, pushing, and lifting moderately heavy items. The Health Tech must be capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking and maneuvering equipment, wheelchairs, and patient stretchers. Proper lifting techniques and body mechanics must be consistently employed to prevent injury.
