Summary

About the Position: This position is located at the Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth in the Pain Management Clinic, Anesthesia Department, Directorate for Surgical Services. The purpose of the position is to perform a variety of medical and clerical support duties which facilitate the work of physicians and professional nurses.

Duties

  • Perform initial screening of patients including, but not limited to, patient check-in, record/report retrieval, recording vital signs, initial complaint, completing procedure intake form.
  • Prepare patients for, and assist providers with, patient exams/procedures as required.
  • Provide post-procedure patient recovery care and discharge instructions.
  • Document care in the electronic health record.
  • Schedule patient appointments for the clinic.
  • Prepare patient charts per daily schedules.
  • Answer phones, take messages for providers, and provide routine pre-procedure instructions to patients.
  • Contact patients regarding appointments, appointment reminders, and clinic reports.
  • Coordinate equipment and supply use ordering, check and inventory clinic supplies the crash cart.
  • Prepare examination rooms between patients, including cleaning surfaces, restocking used equipment and supplies, assembling equipment and supplies for next patient.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. GENERAL AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Six months of general experience which includes (1) any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with performing a variety of medical and clerical support duties which facilitate the work of the Physicians and Nurses, AND six months of specialized experience which includes, performing initial screening of patients, recording vital signs and initial patient complaint and preparing patients for exams/procedures.

EDUCATION: Two years of education above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position, such as, Nursing, Medical Terminology, Health and Medical Sciences, Medical Assisting, Health Information Technology, Phlebotomy.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
