Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Individual Occupations Requirement for the GS-06 grade: Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
- Develops training plans that pertain to food safety and sanitation, standard operating procedures, customer service, etc.
- Develops and updates nutrient database through analysis of menu items.
- Applies knowledge of modified diet therapies and medical nutrition therapy for health and a wide variety of disease states.
- Serves as liaison between patients, healthcare staff and the department.
- Makes menu/recipe changes and updates food service systems.
- Resolves information technology issues related to integrating various systems and software applications.
- Performs computer system updates as needed to ensure efficiency and accuracy of system.
- Troubleshoots and resolves electronic and paper menu issues.
- Ensures that all recipes are standardized and costed.
- Conducts data collection and analysis, corrective action and prepares reports for the purpose of performance improvement activities.
- Consults with clinical nutrition staff to resolve issues pertaining to tray tickets and modified/special diets.
- Contacts external computer contractors when unable to resolve issues with commercial off-the-shelf computer applications/programs.
- Evaluates training needs and establishes training schedules of mandatory and nonmandatory topics.
- Develops and conducts department orientation for new staff.

- Education: To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED). OR,
- Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level.. You must have an equal combination of specialized experience and graduate education. PLEASE NOTE: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Routine work requires repetitive motion activities of the hands and fingers for extensive phone, keyboard and computer mouse use, standing and sitting for extended periods of time, intermittent/non-strenuous ambulation around all areas of the medical center, and carrying light items such as papers, books, portable scales, and food trays.
Occationally, duties may require the movement of audio-visual equipment and/or classroon area organization and driving an automobile.
