Qualifications
Who May Apply: US Citizens
This is a term position not to exceed 13 months. Term positions may be extended up to a maximum of 6 years, and MAY NOT be converted to permanent. Term employment is subject to a one-year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Perform common Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic duties such as diagnose and test functions to locate defects and trace problems to determine malfunctions of equipment, organize items to be transported to appropriate storage areas, prepare vehicles for final inspections by performing diagnostic tune up, perform modifications and repairs on equipment and determine methods to disassemble equipment. Work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT
Work is performed in a variety of positions which are uncomfortable, awkward, and tiring. Work also involves a considerable amount of bending, stretching, climbing, and stooping, either under or on vehicles. Frequently lifts and handles parts and equipment up to 40 pounds. Heavier items are moved/lifted with overhead hoists/cranes or assistance from other workers.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Usually works inside where there is frequent exposure to drafts, changing temperatures, dust, fumes, dirt, oil, and grease while standing on hard surfaces. Occasionally may work outside with the possibility of exposure to adverse weather conditions such as temperature extremes, rain, and snow. There is frequent exposure to cuts, burns, bruises, shocks, and strains and the possibility of skin irritation from vehicle fluids.
