Historic Preservation Specialist

Join FEMA Region 3 as an Historic Preservation Specialist and play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with environmental and historic preservation laws. This position emphasizes the importance of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and provides the opportunity to work on FEMA-funded undertakings. Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with various environmental and historic preservation laws and regulations.
  • Mitigate adverse effects on environmental and historic resources due to agency programs.
  • Analyze proposed actions to determine necessary National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation.
  • Complete both disaster and non-disaster environmental compliance reviews.
  • Provide technical assistance, training, and outreach to stakeholders.
  • Offer timely advice on environmental or historic preservation concerns related to potential impacts.
  • Make determinations regarding effects on historic resources or endangered species.

What You Need to Know:

All employees at FEMA are involved in emergency management and make a difference before, during, and after disasters. Positions may require irregular hours and travel to difficult conditions at emergency sites. This is a CORE (Cadre of On-Call Response/Recovery Employee) position, typically lasting two to four years, with potential for renewal.

Qualifications:

  • IC-11 level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to GS-09) in the federal or private sector, or a Ph.D., or three years of higher education.
  • IC-12 level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to GS-11) focusing on environmental laws and historic preservation.
  • Experience with laws such as the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act.
  • Technical guidance ability related to environmental or historic preservation.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen and pass a background investigation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Government travel card.
  • Subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations.
  • Travel may be required extensively with little advance notice.

Education:

Education can substitute for experience, and degrees from foreign universities must be evaluated. Prospective candidates must submit transcripts with their application.
