Summary

The employee will serve as the Hospital Housekeeping Officer at the Omaha VA Medical Center - VA Nebraska-Western Iowa HCS in Omaha, NE. The nature of the work is common to health care sanitation, regulated medical waste, pest management, recycling and infection control, as well as textile care. The employee directly/indirectly supervises a staff of 25 personnel. This position requires technical expertise and often times requires the employee to perform housekeeping/laundry duties.

Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Review contract specifications for general refuse, infectious waste and recycling contracts.
  • Exercise a high degree of judgment in planning quality control measures, work schedules, production standards and cleaning frequencies for the health care facility.
  • Conduct comprehensive quality control inspections of areas of responsibility and ensures correction of deficiencies on a timely basis.
  • Budget formulation, planning of position description staffing resources and the determination of supplies and equipment required for environmental care functions.
  • Conduct appraisals of the performance of section personnel reassignments, promotions and performance awards.
  • Is responsible for day-to-day scheduling of work, all hazardous/regulated medical waste disposal and recycling activities at this facility as well as office moves, reorganizations etc.
  • Ensure the handling of infectious waste and regulated waste are in compliance with all federal, state and local government laws and regulations.
  • Oversee the contract pest control program which provides a full range of interior and exterior pest control services to all areas and ensures that contract specifications meet EPA, state and local requirements.
  • Oversee the laundry, linen distribution, uniform programs and storage of patient's belongings and other related programs.
  • Interview prospective employees and refer selections to Human Resources for appointments.
  • Conduct and/or supervise special tasks, projects and studies as assigned, analyzing data to determine the most efficient operation.
  • Identify areas for improvement, develop the processes for that improvement, implement the improvements in the program and evaluate.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service. This experience must have equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position Specialized experience includes: being responsible for day-to-day scheduling of work, all hazardous/regulated medical waste disposal and recycling activities; overseeing the contract pest control program; conducting comprehensive quality control inspections; is responsible for the cleaning of all patient area and corridor spaces; conducting performance appraisals; training staff; and controlling the use of supplies and equipment.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) - Applicants must possess a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) - Possess equivalent combinations of education and specialized experience (as described above) to meet the requirements. NOTE: Only graduate education beyond the first year may be used to qualify.

Physical Requirements: The position requirements include but are not limited to the following: constant walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting and working in awkward positions. Climbing of ladders and stairs and use of arms and legs for high cleaning. Heavy lifting as much as 50 pounds and must be able to lift large laundry bags of 40 pounds (dry weight) or more at least five feet to load laundry carts. Moving of large laundry carts, linen and trash carts, and heavy recycle bins. Pushing of recycle tubs, cleaning carts and heavy trash bins. Ability to control very heavy, self-propelled equipment weighing over 1,600 pounds.
