Duties
The Housekeeping Aid (HKA) - Environmental Services (EVS) Technicians who maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families are essential to the patient care experience at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). A VA healthcare career as a HKA-EVS Technician means working alongside other Veterans, who make up 85 percent of the housekeeping staff.
- Non-routine duties require that the position reorganize work schedules efficiently to ensure work is accomplished in a timely manner.
- This position is required to coordinate work with supervisors of other services within the positions area of jurisdiction so as not to interrupt patient care or other activities.
- The position is responsible for the cleaning of all patient areas, corridor spaces throughout Medical Center, Operating Rooms, and all other areas as assigned.
- Responsible for assuring the efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments of subordinates within established policies and schedules set by higher levels of supervision.
- Plans daily and weekly assignments, scheduling periodic work for areas of responsibility, taking into consideration the availability of personnel and equipment to meet established priorities.
- Trains staff and ensures that they are using the patient centered care principles in terms of customer service to patients, patients' family members and personnel.
- Provides special direction to new employees to prepare them for individual assignments, procedures and safety policies.
- Schedules regular meetings with staff to make them aware of new procedures or directives.
- The position keeps the supervisor informed as to the condition of staff, unusual occurrences or matters that should be brought to the attention of their supervisor.
- Keeps subordinates abreast of proper methods, procedures and uses of equipment and supplies; control the use of supplies and equipment to affect cost control within the unit.
- Ensures all safety regulations and procedures are observed and may on occasion be required to conduct training classes on specific safety issues.
- The position approves leave requests for subordinates, counsels' employees, and recommends disciplinary action to a higher-level supervisor whenever non-compliance with policy warrants.
- The position makes formal appraisal of subordinates works performance and conduct.
- The position is responsible for the coordination of activities with other services, including rearranging work schedules during remodeling, painting and relocation of offices, clinics or patient wards and other duties which help coordinate moves.
Work Schedule: All Shifts 1st, 7a.m. - 3:30 p.m., 2nd, 3:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m., 3rd, 11:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.

Physical Requirements: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
