You will serve as an INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the CHIEF, BUREAU OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY of US NMRTC YOKOSUKA JA.

Duties

  • You will work in the Industrial Hygiene Program Office (IHPO) as a senior Industrial Hygienist.
  • You will document shops processes, Similar Exposure Groups (SEG), and samples in the DoD designated Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System – Industrial Hygiene (DOEHRS – IH) database.
  • You will prepare written workplace monitoring plans and tracks their completion, updating the plans as necessary.
  • You will evaluate the need for quantitative assessment of air contamination, noise and other physical stressors as well as the quantitative assessment of ventilation systems.
  • You will work with engineering, safety and supervisory personnel to devise control measures such as change in work procedures, ventilation systems, material substitution, or the use of personal protective devices.
  • You will research chemical and toxicological literature, and develop or recommend individualized methods and approaches to obtain a valid and complete evaluation.
  • You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations individually and as part of a team.
  • You will assess work practices to identify the population at risk and to detect violations of published health standards (e.g. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, DoD and DoN directives).
  • You will provide toxicological data, review activity safety and health instructions and participate in command safety and health meetings, such as hazardous material control committees.

  • This position may require travel to places within and outside the contiguous United States which could include remote or isolated sites. You may be required to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • If eligible for permanent change of station, the appointee will be required to sign a transportation agreement to establish a Government time in service requirement of 12 months.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport.
  • May be required to obtain a VISA dependent on the overseas country's laws/regulations.

  • Certification in comprehensive practice by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) is highly desired.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  1. Conducting industrial hygiene inspections, surveys, and evaluations;
  2. Assessing work practices to identify potential risks and violations; and
  3. Interpreting and reporting industrial hygiene sample methods, results, data, and reports.

Education

Applicants must meet one of the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:


You must possess:
  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).
The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

Evaluation of Education

All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum.

Priority consideration will be given to military spouse preference and family member preference eligible residing in the commute area of the duty location for this position. Commute area is defined as the geographic area surrounding the duty location in which people can reasonably be expected to travel back and forth daily.
