Summary

You will serve as an INTERDISCIPLINARY (PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/OCEANOGRAPHY) in the Ocean Forecasting Division (N52), Modeling and Forecasting Department (N5), Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center of FLT NUMER OCEANGPHY METEO CTR.

Duties

  • You will serve as a senior ocean prediction scientist and team lead with responsibility to conceptualize, develop, implement, document, and train other scientists/modelers.
  • You will ensure ocean prediction products meet operational accuracy, security, visual quality, dissemination medium and time requirements.
  • You will coordinate research and development activities, inside and outside of the Navy community, in forecasting ocean phenomena and validating numerical ocean models targeted for transition into operational use.
  • You will develop, plan and implement formal procedures to track ocean prediction product quality in accordance with current practices and requirements, including documentation and training.
  • You will develop, implement, and maintain a plan for prediction system product maintenance related to development, content, format, update frequency, or quality control.

  1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
1360-

  1. Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

EXPERIENCE:
In addition to the Basic Education Requirements stated above, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector:
  • Experience applying theories and principles of physical oceanography and processes that influence the success of Navy missions in the open-ocean and/or in the coastal (littoral) ocean;
  • Experience applying techniques within physical oceanography practices of ocean numerical modeling as used to forecast open-ocean and/or coastal (littoral) ocean conditions of relevance to Navy missions;
  • Experience practicing data assimilation (including appropriation of use), time series analysis, and the application of other analytical and statistical procedures for the scientific interpretation of physical oceanographic data;
  • Experience running ocean prediction systems in automated environments such as a super-computing environment;
  • Experience performing the METOC model transition process as applied by the Navy and FNMOC;
  • Experience utilizing ocean prediction system model products to support warfare areas and missions;
  • Experience in team leadership and process formulation and evaluation, with emphasis on statistical and qualitative analysis, scientific procedure and problem solving; and
  • Experience communicating orally and presenting technical and non-technical material to audiences of various knowledge and interest levels.
