Summary

About the Position: This position is located at Army Health Clinic McAfee, Directorate of Brach Clinical, Army Health Clinic Preventive Medicine, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.

Duties

  • As a technical expert, coordinates on-site survey support and conducts comprehensive industrial hygiene and environmental health surveys.
  • Ensures the workplace is in compliance with current appropriate regulations.
  • Oversees the submission of samples to appropriate laboratories for analysis.
  • Prepares detailed technical reports of survey findings with recommended corrective actions.
  • Performs literature reviews and prepare technical papers, bulletins, circulars, and guides, as well as instructional manuals.
  • Conducts special studies, surveys, and assistance visits for DOD organizations on a variety of industrial hygiene issues.
  • Conducts training on general industrial hygiene topics, to include hazard communication, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment use, hearing conservation, ergonomics, and confined space entry requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Qualification Requirement for Industrial Hygienist:

Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR

Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technicology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.

Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting on-site industrial hygiene and environmental health surveys, generating reports of occupational and environmental health hazards or exposures found, and submitting samples to appropriate laboratories for analysis. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.   • Incumbent may be exposed to chemical, physical, and biological health hazards requiring the ability to wear respiratory, hearing, vision, and other protective equipment as recommended by OSHA, NIOSH, DOD, and other consensus organizations.
