Conditions of employment
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.

- The health status of personnel is monitored periodically using biologic and serologic tests and physical examinations.
- Temperature extremes are common. Exposure to disagreeable odors, working around frightened, unpredictable, and ill-natured animals, and exposure to the risks and hazards of harmful biological, chemical, and physical agents are possible.
- The work includes frequent inspections of industrial workplaces, requiring the employee to carry a considerable amount of equipment and involves a good deal of walking, standing, bending and climbing.
- Work is performed in an office, laboratories, indoor and outdoor animal holding facilities, necropsy rooms, industrial settings and building mechanical spaces.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
BASIC REQUIREMENT: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science;
OR
A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene;
OR
Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
FOR THE GS-11 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-09 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
- Conducts industrial hygiene inspections of establishments to assess work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers, and to detect violations of published health standards.
- Performs a variety of additional industrial hygiene functions, such as providing technical assistance to employers, following up on abatement actions to be taken by businesses, conducting literature searches related to a specific hazard.
- Prepares report or portion of report, citing violations and recommending penalties and abatement dates.
OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree, or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in chemistry, biology, physics, statistics, or a related field.
Note: Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

- This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university.
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-11 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
