Summary
This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service at the Soil Management and Sugarbeet Research Unit in Fort Collins, CO.
In this position, you will help develop novel quantitative solutions for standardizing, harmonizing, analyzing, interpreting and communicating all forms of research data needed to address complex problems in agriculture.
This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 10 years.

Duties
- Uses appropriate computer software and approaches to perform bioinformatics analyses for experimental procedures, techniques, and data collections formats.
- Works collaboratively in developing efficient computational methodologies to analyze agricultural/biological data with environmental data; and methods to conduct comparative genome and phenomic analyses on a variety of computer platforms.
- Manipulates, mines, and translates large data sets into technological solutions, and uses originality in the application of existing bioinformatics algorithms.
- Ensures that data sampling protocols are sound and result in high level of data integrity and secure data storage.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Basic Requirements
Biology (0401 series)
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Data Scientist (1560 series)
Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown above in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.
AND
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting bioinformatics research; utilizing scripting and programming languages (such as R, Python, C#, etc.) for data analysis; and manipulating or mining biological or agricultural data.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
