Duties
Program Directors have an unparalleled opportunity and responsibility to ensure that NSF-funded research is at the forefront of advancing fundamental knowledge. In support of this, Program Directors are responsible for extensive interaction with academic research communities and industry, as well as interaction with other Federal agencies that may lead to the development of interagency collaborations. Within this context, Program Directors solicit, receive and review research and education proposals, make funding recommendations, administer awards, and undertake interaction with research communities in these fields. They are also responsible for service to Foundation-wide activities and initiatives that together accomplish NSF's strategic goals to: (1) Empower STEM talent to fully participate in science and engineering (2) Create new knowledge about our universe, our world and ourselves (3) Benefit society by translating knowledge into solutions (4) Excel at NSF operations and management.
The newly-established Infrastructure Systems and People program supports fundamental and transformative research focused on the design, operations, management, restoration and decommissioning of current and future infrastructure systems, understanding their impact on the communities they serve. The program supports research on innovative theories and methods that lead to cost-effective, operationally efficient, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure systems that support people and community needs.
The Infrastructure Systems and Peopleprogram is part of the Operations and Design cluster, which is managed by a team of Program Directors. The team of Program Directors participates in several cross-cutting initiatives within the National Science Foundation, and breadth of experience in such initiatives is required. The position requires a commitment to high standards of intellectualism and ethical conduct, a considerable breadth of interest, receptivity to new ideas, a strong sense of fairness, good judgment, and a high degree of personal integrity.

Qualifications
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Engineering, Mathematics, or a Physical or Social Science field plus after award of the Ph.D., six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position.

- Demonstrated research, analytical, and technical writing skills that evidence the ability to make recommendations with written justification, provide intellectual leadership with technical depth in the areas of Infrastructure Systems and People, and technical breadth in a wide range of issues related to research programs and facilities, to enhance the strength and potential of the national engineering research community.
- Expertise in organization, implementation and management of a proposal-driven grant program, including strategic planning, allocating resources to meet a spectrum of goals, ensuring integrity and consistency in the grant award/decline management process.
- Demonstrated ability to cooperate and work with peers in other scientific disciplines and to advocate program plans and policies to individuals in the Foundation, other government agencies, and academic institutions.
- Knowledge and understanding of the mission and goals of the National Science Foundation (NSF) as well as how NSF interacts with the scientific community.
