Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to:
- Duties include providing assessment and management of ambulatory patients seen in the Emergency Department.
- Evaluate patients for emergency medical conditions, order appropriate diagnostic studies and perform a wide range of treatment procedures under the direction of the supervising physician.
- Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations to include crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, and one-to-one observations.
- The incumbent performs ongoing patient care duties in the Emergency Department.
- Assists Emergency Department Physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening procedures such as defibrillation, cardioversions, insertion of chest drainage tubes, or initiation of mechanical ventilation to restore normal physiological function or prevent deterioration of patient's condition.
- Duties also include dressing changes, wound management, suture removal, repair of simple lacerations, Foley catheters insertion, splint, binder and bandage applications, and performance of tracheotomy care.
- Incumbent may be asked to respond to medical emergencies on the facility grounds, and sometimes encounters situations which may be life threatening as part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT).
Work Schedule: Typically Monday - Friday 7:30 PM - 8:00 AM.

Basic Requirement - Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) In order to meet the Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) for this occupation, candidates must have the following specialized experience:
- Performing support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes:
- Incumbent will serve in a developmental assignment which is designed to provide the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience to perform the full range of routine and non-routine assignment with a high level of independence.
- Incumbent will jointly establish specific goals, objectives, and projects. The incumbent will organize work to achieve approved goals.
- Work will be reviewed by the supervisor to evaluate the following: Adherence to designated policies and procedures; ability to deal with new, unusual and ongoing changes; ability to coordinate activities with other programs, and effectiveness in interpersonal relationships. In addition, the supervisor will conduct spot checks to evaluate the incumbent's progress.
Specialized Experience for GS-7: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
- Knowledge of the major body systems, i.e., skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, circulatory, digestive and genitourinary, to perform patient examination and to provide prompt patient care and appropriate patient handling.
- Working knowledge of topographic anatomy, e.g., right/left, surface, proximal/distal, superior, inferior, to accurately transmit location information about the body.
- Working knowledge of diagnostic signs, e.g., pulse, respiration, blood pressure, temperature, skin color, pupils of the eyes, state of consciousness, ability to move on command, reaction to pain, etc., to perform patient examination, to provide patient care, and to ensure appropriate patient handling.
- Knowledge of protocol-approved list of medications (their uses, doses, side effects and toxicity signs) sufficient to properly administer drugs even when directed to do so by the physician.
- Knowledge of proper dosages required in keeping with method of administration.
- Skill in emergency medicine techniques to determine, based on the diagnosis of the patient, the approach that will most effectively sustain the patient's life.
- This is typically evidenced by certification in BCLS, ACLS, ITLS, and ATLS.
- Skill in emergency communication techniques and the operation of communications equipment so as to be able to accurately obtain and relay information to and from health care providers.
- Knowledge sufficient to understand the legal considerations of emergency care, e.g., actual/implied consent, good Samaritan laws, etc., to limit exposure to lawsuits, while maintaining the legal standards of care.
