BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above)
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
- Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities.
- Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities.
- Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service.
- Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities.
- Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children).
- Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop.
- Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility.
- Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.
Education and Training
For GS-5: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower broadband NK-01, equivalent to the next lower grade GS-04 or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience is experience in applying; Planning and preparing work schedules; assigning work to subordinates based on priorities and requirement considerations; evaluating work performances, advising, counseling, or instructing employees; interviewing for positions, recommending appointments, promotions, or reassignments; resolving employee complaints and referring grievances to higher management; identifying and arranging developmental training needs of employees, improving or increasing work production, and developing performance standards NOTE: Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement.

EDUCATION: 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. NOTE: You must submit copies of your official transcripts. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

- Basic knowledge of lifesaving, first aid, and CPR as would be learned through an approved course leading to certification.
- Limited knowledge of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated current physical ability to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants.
- Ability to orient lower graded employees, distribute/balance work assignments, and monitor work accomplishment.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
