Duties

  • As a Laborer (MVO) you will perform a variety of manual labor tasks incidental to trade/craft work or warehousing activities.
  • Assist skilled trades or craftsmen by retrieving tools, materials, or equipment.
  • Perform duties in grounds keeping, construction activities, and building maintenance.
  • Use common hand tools which require heavy physical effort.
  • Use power equipment; e.g., power lawn mowers, specialized slope mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, wood chippers and high-pressure water pumps.
  • Clean tools, equipment, and work areas.
  • Load and unload heavy boxes and materials by hand or with the assistance of equipment.
  • Operate government vehicles; e.g., pickup trucks/sedans, flatbed trucks and others which typically have an approximate gross weight up to 10,000lbs to transport bulk materials, equipment, and/or passengers to and from work sites in various conditions
  • Duties include grass cutting, tree trimming, underground drain pipe cleaning, trash removal, snow shoveling, traffic control flagging, clean and dig ditches by hand, janitorial duties, painting, and maintain tools and equipment
  • Keep work records for all assigned tasks.

Conditions of Employment

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license.
  • May be required to serve a one year probationary period.
  • Must undergo a pre-employment physical then annually thereafter.
  • Must be able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification upon employment.
  • Required to obtain a First Aid Certification upon employment and maintain for the duration of that employment.
  • Must be willing to take and pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and must be willing and able to pass random drug and alcohol (to include urine analysis) tests thereafter.

Basic Requirement for Position:

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Laborer (MVO) without more than normal supervision. Qualified applicants must show in their resume the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of a Laborer (MVO), WG-3502-5 without more than normal supervision, such as operate motor vehicles in all conditions; manually load/unload trucks; operate common hand tools which require heavy physical effort and power equipment such as riding lawn mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, wood chippers; and perform simple landscaping work. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Efforts:
Frequently lifts, carries, and moves objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds. Position requires frequent bending, stooping, standing, reaching, pushing, pulling, working on ladders and walking. Motor vehicle operation requires light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls.

Working Conditions:

Laborers perform work outdoors, indoors and in confined spaces. Indoor and underground work may occur in drafty and wet places all year long. Outdoor work may be performed for long periods, under all weather conditions, all year long. Work may be performed in close proximity to coworkers or may be performed alone. Floor and ground surfaces are sometimes uneven, oily and slippery. Incumbent is exposed to moving objects, sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, noise and vibration from equipment. Occasionally the employee must climb and work from ladders (stationary, extension) and scaffolding, and is subject to serious injury from slipping and falling. Incumbent must work around moving objects or vehicles. Work involves exposure to dirt, grease, oils, smoke, gas, some solvents and other mild hazardous chemicals. Exerts very heavy physical effort in doing tasks as frequently lifting and moving objects weighing in excess of 50 lbs.

Operate vehicles in all kinds of weather in a controlled traffic environment on public roads. Drivers are exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises and broken bones as a result of serious accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle. May drive in heavy traffic and highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.
