Summary

This position is located at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Hospital within the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS). The employee will serve as a laborer and motor vehicle operator in support of the Interior Design and Environmental Management Services service lines.

Duties

Major duties include:

  • Move office furniture to and from various locations throughout the SFVAHCS which includes moves between buildings located on the main hospital campus as well as moves to and from the Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC)
  • Drive up to 7 hours in a day on a weekly basis utilizing public roads including Federal, state, and county highways, and back roads
  • Utilize a one-and-a-half-ton truck, gross vehicle weight rating (GVW) 10,100/4582, gross axle weight front (GAWF) 3570/1620, gross axle weight rear (GAWR) 7060/3203 for the transporting of wastes from the VA Hospital to the sterilizer compactor area four to five times daily
  • Disinfect and exchange bio-hazard (red) barrels, safely load, transport, manifest, and treat Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) from the main hospital as well as community partners
  • Establish a working relationship with facility counterparts for all sharing agreements established
  • Repair, install, and hang items such as clocks, pictures, bulletin boards, window treatments, signage, cubicle tracking, privacy curtains, and dispensers
  • Assemble and disassemble various types of furniture
  • Setup special events and meetings with floor plan layouts, blueprints, maps, etc.
  • Perform Housekeeping Aid duties as needed

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (work hours may be further discussed during the interview)

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. For this position, you must have the ability to perform the full range of duties of a Laborer (Motor Vehicle Operator) without more than normal supervision. Related experience includes: operating riding and non-riding equipment (i.e., Kubotas, Bobcats, trucks, trailers, forklifts, other types of vehicles); provide maintenance and repair services; follow directions and interpret instructions (i.e., maps, floor plan layouts, etc.); and operate powered and non-powered tools (i.e., screw guns, wrenches, shovels, hammers, drills, etc.).

The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

In addition to the related experience (noted above) there is also a Driver's License requirement: Must possess a valid U.S. state-issued driver's license.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Incumbent must be able to perform heavy physical effort over an eight (8) hour tour including continuous standing, bending, lifting, turning, stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, rubbing, reaching, and climbing. Objects weighing in excess of fifty pounds must be lifted or moved routinely. He/she must be able to operate heavy riding and non riding equipment in areas of heavy traffic, close quarters, and other various obstacles in a safe and smooth manner. He/She is frequently required to use hands or fingers, handle or feel; as well as being able to climb or balance themselves. specific vision abilities required to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Unloading of debris into dumpsters requires overhead lifting.

Work Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the Labor is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and
outdoor weather conditions. He/She is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals are used, and vibration of equipment. While performing this job, the noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud. The Laborer is required to work inside and outside in all types of weather conditions and is exposed to such hazards as high and extremely low temperatures, strains from handling heavy objects, cuts, and abrasions from sharp or pointed tools and equipment. He/She is subject to noise, dust, and vibration from machinery or other equipment. He/She drives in all types of traffic and/or weather conditions. and is exposed to possible accidents and injury.
