This position is located in Seasonal Staffing Office-Yosemite National Park and is responsible for the identification, research, planning, treatment, and preservation maintenance of cultural landscapes.

Duties

  • Performs landscape architectural duties associated with review, design, treatment, and monitoring of cultural landscapes.
  • Develops and maintains liaisons and effective working relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, and the public.
  • Identifies research needs and suitable research designs and conducts or oversees various levels of documentary research and field investigation.
  • Conducts on-site investigations of project sites to determine the feasibility of proposed projects.
  • Conducts and coordinates cultural landscape research projects related to the identification, documentation, analysis and evaluation, and treatment.
  • Prepares and maintains cultural landscape inventories,
  • Prepares cultural landscape reports on existing conditions and defining treatment actions.
  • Negotiates cooperative and interagency agreements and other cooperative instruments needed to effectively carry out resource stewardship goals.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Specialized Qualification.

Basic Requirement: Landscape Architect-0807

Education: A degree in landscape architecture or landscape design.
- OR -
Combination of Education and Experience: For each year short of graduation, one year of experience under professional leadership and guidance of such character and diversity as to be a satisfactory substitute for the required education. This experience must have included original landscape design.
- AND -
To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities/competencies to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes assisting in the identification, research, planning, treatment, and preservation maintenance of conventional historic landscapes; identifying threats and needs and conducting on-site investigations of project sites to determine the feasibility of proposed projects including the development of design alternatives and subsequent analysis to ensure the project is consistent with policies, guidelines, standards and environmental and cultural compliance laws and regulations to include the National Historic Preservation Act, and conducting and coordinating cultural landscape research projects related to the identification, documentation, analysis, evaluation, and preservation treatment of cultural landscapes.

Education: Successful completion of at least 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. You must include transcripts

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify. For example, 3 months of experience would be 25% of the required 12 months. 45 semester hours of graduate education out of the required 54, would meet 50% of the 18 semester hours beyond what's required of the GS-09 grade level. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This position has a mandatory education requirement.

Physical Demands: Work is mostly sedentary, with some walking at construction sites during field orientation, design and construction phases. Some projects can only be accessed by hiking or riding stock in mountainous terrain. May be required to drive over extended distances in inclement weather on mountainous roads using snow chains. Requires the ability to operate a government vehicle. Because of project demands, considerable personal stress is ever-present.
Working Conditions: Work is generally performed in an office setting, with occasional fieldwork involving moderate risks of construction operations. Travel to project sites will be required, and may involve driving a vehicle, walking, or riding stock. Some projects are in undeveloped areas including mountain wilderness. Projects may occur during inclement weather such as rain, snow, or high temperatures and may occasionally be scheduled at night.

The duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
