Summary

This position performs as a Laundry Worker assigned to the Environmental Management Service (EMS) at the Department of Veterans Affairs Sierra Nevada Health Care System.

Duties

Major duties include but not limited to:
  • Use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as Laundry Worker, Custodial Worker, and other related trades.
  • Processing, delivering, issuing, pickup, and storage of linen and employee uniforms as well as the tracking of incoming garments and linens,
  • inventory and record keeping of curtains, slings and other items as required.
  • Fills linen carts with required amounts of linen in accordance with established quotas and adjusts quotas when appropriate.
  • Performance of regularly scheduled linen inventories.
  • Takes orders via telephone for linen adjustments.
  • Maintains current vendor invoices to correct any linen problems and provide any other pertinent information relative to linen/uniform management and informs appropriate supervisor.
  • Delivers clean linen to clinical areas throughout the VA of Sierra Nevada Healthcare System.
  • Counts incoming linen and reports discrepancies to appropriate supervisor.
  • Unloads linen carts onto other linen carts and shelves designated for this purpose.
  • Sorts and stores linen in accordance with the Service's established by infection control policy.
  • Maintain uniform records consisting of number of delivery and pickup sites,
  • Issues uniforms to new employees and assists new employees with employee uniform fittings.
  • Signs-off for employees clearing the station, or, in the case of lost or damaged uniforms notifies Environmental Management Services for issuance of bills of collection.
  • Stamps uniforms and various garments using various types of heat press machines.
  • Responsible for collection, record safekeeping and delivery of patient effects.
  • Responsible for collection, and inventory of all linen items in the textile care department.
  • Keeps work area, linen carts and bins in a clean, sanitary condition.
  • Performs housekeeping duties as required to maintain a clean and orderly work site and in main hospital as needed, following general instructions on the work to be done.
  • Use various preparations to clean and maintain linoleum, wood, marble, and various kinds of floor, wall, and ceiling surfaces.
  • Wet mopping, sweeping, removing trash from work areas, dusting, cleaning lavatories, and refilling paper towel and toilet dispensers throughout medical facility.
  • May be required to clean carpets and to scrub, strip and buff tile floors.
  • Operate a commercial sewing machine and make alterations to employee uniforms as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and as required due to emergency situations or staff shortages.
Work involves a level of physical effort as follow:
  • Required to be on his/her feet the majority of the time, and must be able to bend, squat, lift, and to climb ladders.
  • Frequently lift bundles weighing 25 pounds; however, in receiving
  • and shipping, occasional lifting of bulk bundles weighing over 50 pounds is required.
  • Must possess a certain amount of quickness in hand and arm movements to meet production standards.
  • Requires continuous body and arm movement, walking, standing, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting bulk lots of linen weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Pushes, pulls and guides wheeled linen carts weighing up to 1000 pounds as a normal part of the duties performed in the job.
