Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

Duties

This Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technician position is in Diagnostic Imaging services at the VA Boston Healthcare System, West Roxbury, MA campus. This position is a full-time at 40 hours per week.

The Lead Technologist coordinates routine technical operation of the Diagnostic section of Radiology. Lead a group of DRTs who staff the following areas: Cardiac Catheterization, Electrophysiology Lab, Urology, Gastrointestinal Fluoroscopy, Endoscopy, Operating Room, Emergency and Main department X-ray as well as remote X-ray sites. The Lead also oversees students performing their clinical rotations.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Help establish and implement protocols required to perform procedures in all modalities done in the radiology department. The incumbent must be proficient in the VA's entire computer systems and scheduling platforms. The incumbent will be able to train new technologists and radiology MSAs.
  • Help coordinate administration of contrast material for radiology exams performed under the direction of the radiologist according to protocols.
  • Provide orientation and training to employees in all sections of the radiology department.
  • Coordinate vacation coverage, on call coverage, intermittent technologist coverage, as well as break/lunch schedules for the section, assuringadequate staffing is available so that patient care is not compromised.
  • Ensures that unit patients are called to the imaging department in a timely manner, and that all inpatient requisitions are completed within 24 hours.
  • Continuously monitor and improve procedures in the radiology department. Coordinating quality improvement activities within the imaging section. Recommends area for review and improvement. Collects data and submits in final form to the supervisor.
  • Practice hospital safety, radiation safety, infection control and universal precautions always within age and/or gender specific guidelines. Manage the scheduling of Intermittent technologists to ensure departments are appropriately staffed.
  • Ability to resolve informal employee complaints and demonstrate effective conflict resolution amongst co-workers.
  • Runs daily general radiology pending, past scheduled and hold list, ensuring that orders are handled appropriately.
  • Performs daily tier one huddles in the department and through teams to address safety concerns, equipment issues and informational updates.
  • Attends weekly supervisor/lead huddles, bringing any pertinent topics for discussion.
  • Responsible for timecards. Ensuring that time requests and premium pay requests are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Updates sharepoint schedule for inpatient and outpatient fluoroscopy exams, including speech pathology studies.
  • Routinely enters work orders and leaf requests to engineering and HTM. Maintaining equipment functionality and a safe workplace.
  • Responsible for logging equipment issues into the QC folder and updates once issues are resolved.
  • Works with the PACS admins to correct missing or imaging errors.
  • Review and address problem case log.
  • Maintains the lead shield database, ensuring that all lead items are compliant, and the database is up to date and posted on the S drive.
  • Provides patient care, able to transfer patients to radiographic table and able to prepare oral and injectable contrast as needed.
  • Orients radiography students, constructs training schedules and works closely with students to provide honest feedback and reviews. Maintains students' paperwork, entering competencies and evaluations into trajecsys.
  • Works with the logistics department regarding the ordering of radiology supplies. Ability to resolve informal employee complaints and demonstrate effective conflict resolution amongst co-workers.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/25/2025.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.)
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from (other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education(DOE)).
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT)(R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammograph (M) duties performed independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.
  • English Language Proficiency. RTs/RRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates:

Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist GS-10:
Experience:
At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-09 directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. The incumbent functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below. The incumbent provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following:
  • Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work.
  • *Ability to resolve informal employee complaints.
  • *Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations.
