Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

  • Implements & coordinates radiation protection standards, devices, and techniques
  • Coordinates a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative to effectively diagnose patients by using a wide variety of complex imaging exams

  • Possesses and applies basic physics including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields, and properties of x-ray, MRI & CT to understand the operation of the equipment.
  • Performs and monitors safety checks on patients, employees, and visitors to comply with FDA safety standards regarding ferrous objects and cardiac pacemakers
  • Reviews medical records, interviews patients and communicates with onsite or offsite Radiologist(s
  • Positions and images the patient, prepares the processed media for interpretation by a Radiologist, assures images are properly identified with patient demographics and verifies the archiving on the Picture Archiving Computer System (PACS).
  • Obtains other pertinent diagnostic examinations (CT, MRI, & X-Rays.) for the Radiologist
  • Advises Radiologist(s) and or Radiologist Physician Assistant of significant abnormalities that require their immediate attention and/or visualization while the patient is undergoing examination.
  • Assists Radiologists and provides evaluation and reports to the Diagnostic Supervisor
  • Identifies patient properly through the Radiology Information System (RIS) interface identifier.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment according to specific Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients, including patient electronic records, exam requisitions, registering and/or editing of patient exams in the RIS and the sending/retrieving of images in the PACS.
  • Maintains awareness and practice of the safety policies/procedures of the medical center
  • Develops and maintains patient prep procedures for multiple modality areas
  • Explains examinations to be performed to patients so requirements of the patients are thoroughly understood.
  • Follows all local and VHA policies and procedures dealing with access and utilization of the scheduling package and/or advanced clinic access
  • Collaboratively ensures compliance, in accordance with the VHA Directive and /or local policy to the Supervisor
  • Develops and assists Diagnostic Radiology and MRI Supervisors in Staff Schedules monthly
  • Reviews and monitors work of Diagnostic Radiology, MRI & CT Technologists are being done appropriately and workload is being dispersed amongst all Technologist Staff
  • Assist Diagnostic Radiology and MRI Supervisor with planning, developing, and directing the operations of multiple modality areas.
  • Provides clinical coverage for Interoperative cases, Fluoroscopic studies, Diagnostic X-Ray's, Anesthesia Pain, GI lab, MRI, and CT Cases
  • Directs the work of Diagnostic Radiology and MRI Technologist staff and assists with clinical duties in CT
  • Triages work according to emergency needs with an ability to multitask efficiently in a high-volume service
  • Notifies Supervisors and Biomedical Team of any quality and or compliance issues with equipment.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
.Grade Determinations:
Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-10

(1) Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level

The incumbent functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs [at the GS-9 level and below. The incumbent provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*)

i. Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work.
ii. *Ability to resolve informal employee complaints.
iii. *Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures
iv. Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations.

Preferred Experience: 1. ARRT certification with a minimum of 8 years MRI experience
2. ARRT certification with a minimum of 8 years General X-Ray experience
3.ARRT certification with a minimum of 2 years CT experience

Physical Requirements: This employee functions in direct patient care. Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (X-Ray, CT & MRI) work requires long periods of standing and/or walking up to 8 hours. There is repeated bending, pushing/pulling, reaching above shoulders, use of both hands (hands and fingers), twisting and carrying of moderately heavy articles weighing from 15-44 pounds such as digital imaging plates, grids, as well as wearing lead aprons. Movement and manipulation of moderately heavy equipment, which is generally power assisted, such as portable machines, hospital beds, gurneys, wheelchairs, and patent lift equipment. Positioning of patients who are disabled may require considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Heavy lifting of incapacitated patients to be done with assistance from other employees and various Safe Patient Handling & Mobility devices (i.e. EZ-MAT, overhead lifts, slider boards, etc.) provided by the Radiology Section. Near vision correctable at 13 inches to 16 inches to Jaeger 1 - 4 and far vision correctable in one eye to 20/50 and to 20/100 in the other is acceptable. Hearing aids are permitted in X-Ray & CT. The ability to read written orders, computer screens, patient records, and equipment controls; and the ability to communicate with patients, physicians, and coworkers. Near visual acuity to assess patient's physical condition when performing exams and evaluating images for diagnostic quality. Must be able to speak and hear to communicate with patients; ability to make critical decisions, interact with patients of different ages and health conditions, maintain patient confidentiality, work under stressful conditions.
