Summary

This position is located in San Diego VA Medical Center. The Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist performs general diagnostic radiography of the entire body. These exams are performed with and without the use of contrast materials. Employee serves as supervisor during second shift. Supports radiologist or other medical officers to produce radiographic studies used to diagnose medical conditions.

Major Duties include but not limited to:

  • Inventory Control: Ensures that adequate quantities of supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. Assures that diagnostic radiology procedure rooms are always stocked with necessary supplies with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Assists in determining costs for specific exams, and projecting costs for budgetary purposes. Coordinates new product evaluation. Recommends methods and products to reduce costs and/or increase quality.
  • Technologist Staff Scheduling: Provides technical oversight of personnel and workload to provide optimal patient care daily. Develops and maintains an on-call schedule for diagnostic technologists. Determines staffing requirements based on past, present, and future workload patterns and develops the weekly/monthly schedules. Organizes staff work assignments, including lunch and break rotations. Reports absences and tardiness to Assistant Chief Technologist and Chief Technologist. Recommends the reassignment of technologists, if necessary, because of call-ins or increased/decreased workload. Coordinates leave requests i.e. vacation schedules, to maintain optimal staffing levels.
  • Staff Training: Trains new technologists in operation radiographic equipment and computerized equipment such as Direct Digital Radiography (DR), Digital Fluoroscopy, Computer Acquisition and post-processing workstations, PACS viewing stations, WEBPACS desk top viewing software and hospital computer systems such as VISTA and CPRS. Develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs. Recommends, coordinates and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols. Instruct other technologists on specialized tasks and new/modified procedures and policies. Participates in the education of diagnostic technologists through departmental in-services. Participates in the evaluation of new employees. Supervises/evaluates student technologist performance during the absence of the Education Coordinator.
  • Receives requests or instructions for procedures. Interprets routine requests independently and/or receives instructions from radiologist or medical officers. Receives assignments for a variety of difficult examinations. Independently interprets and carries out the requests made by physicians. Supervision is often administrative, and employee must contact radiologist or higher graded expert in the department or in some cases at another location. Employee understands and carries out the requests made by physicians or seeks assistance of the supervisor when an uncommon, unique or new procedure is required. Obtains patient's clinical record, diagnosis and laboratory results when needed for reference to complete examinations.
  • Performs radiographic exams of the head, spine (includes myelography), chest, abdomen (includes exams of GI tract, gallbladder, urinary system and fistula) and extremities (includes arthrography). These are achieved by using diagnostic x-ray equipment such as fluoroscopic units, tomographic unit, and general diagnostic units, both digital and conventional. Maintains a knowledge of anatomy and physiology, including cross-sectional anatomy, to recognize unusual images and determine proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.
  • Responsible to the radiologists and supervisor for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed to assure a high level of acceptability of radiographs which minimize patient dosage and reduce costs.
  • Responsible to explain exams to competent patients so that the patient understands what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, is possible. May be required by procedure or patient's condition to monitor vital signs, recognize allergic reactions, and initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Performs radiographic exams at the bedside and in the operating rooms providing diagnostic x-rays to the surgeons and professional staff on patients that are unable to be x-rayed in the Radiology Service due to incapacity or surgical procedures. Assists surgeons in the operating suite in performing complex fluoroscopic procedures such as angiography.
  • Responsible for cleanliness and stocking adequate levels of supplies in assigned area. Report equipment malfunction in a timely manner to supervisor.
  • Reviews new developments within the field and make recommendations to the immediate supervisor or Chief Technologist.
Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 7:30-4pm (Weekends, variable shifts, holidays, and on-call as needed for patient care).

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). NOTE: Assignment to the clinical program director requires meeting JRCERT minimum educational standards as noted in the assignment description. (Transcripts Required)
  • English Language Proficiency: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
  • Loss of Credential. An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain certification within two years, or who fails to maintain the required certification must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment.

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be met.

Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-9 Experience. At least (1) one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8), directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Examples of qualifying experience include, but are not limited to: Performs technical work in support of diagnostic radiology under the direction of a physician. Operates radiology equipment both mobile and fixed and assists the radiologist with fluoroscopic procedures as part of the diagnostic plan for patients. Assists surgeons in the operating suite in performing complex fluoroscopic procedures including angiography.

Must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
  • *Ability to organize work, set priorities, delegate tasks and responsibilities.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
  • *Skill in assessing qualifications and abilities of current and prospective employees.
  • *Ability to consult with radiologist to develop standard and non-standard treatment/exam protocols.
  • Ability to independently perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations.
Preferred Experience:
  • 3-5 years of experience as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist in an acute care setting.
  • 1-2 years of supervisory or leadership experience
  • Experience with work distribution and creating future schedules rotating assignments.
  • Is certified in Radiologic Technology (CRT) with the state of California is in Radiography and Fluoroscopy is preferred.

Physical Requirements: Physical Requirements: DRT's work requires long periods of standing and walking up to 8 hours. There is repeated bending, pushing / pulling, reaching above shoulders, use of both hands (hands and fingers), twisting and carrying of moderately heavy articles weighing from 15-44 pounds such as multiple cassettes, grids, as well as wearing lead aprons. Movement of moderately heavy equipment is generally power assisted such as portable machines. Positioning of patients who are disabled may require considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Heavy lifting of incapacitated patients is done only with help of other employees and devices provided by the Radiology Section.
