Summary

The Diagnostic Radiologic Team Leader in MRI has dual responsibilities related to oversight of Radiology clinical operations and direct patient care duties. The Diagnostic Team Lead is supervised directly by the Supervisory DRT.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensures that adequate quantities of radiologic supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt, and inventory control.
  • Assists in determining equipment/inventory needs of Technologists and Radiologists and coordinates new product evaluations.
  • Recommends methods and products to improve quality, safety and where possible reduce costs.
  • Assists Supervisory DRT with creation and posting of work schedules and Technologist assignments. Schedule responsibilities include maintenance of the after-hour and weekend schedules, rotation rosters, contingency coverage, as required by clinic needs.
  • Organizes staff work assignments, including lunch and break rotations such that patient care coverage is continuous throughout the day.
  • Monitors all aspect in the imaging chain from image acquisition to display of the images on computers screens and Radiologist's PACS stations.
  • Oversees the clinical aspects of the PACS image display analogous to historic film images. The DRT Lead is not the PACS manager but rather oversees the technologist related PACS processes.
  • Performs a range of clinical PACS oversight duties which include assessing operational status of PACS, transmission of images from the modalities to the PACS, assessing and directing correction of technologist errors (both quality and process errors).
  • Reports technical problems with the PACS and/or VISTA to the PACS manager, the Supervisory DRT and the Lead or Chief of Radiologist.
  • Performs oversight and coordination of technologist's clinical duties in real time to improve work efficiency, safety, and the patient's experience while in the Radiology department.
  • Monitors technologist morale and job satisfaction and conveys those sentiments and needed improvements to the Supervisory DRT with the goal of optimizing job satisfaction and skill building.
  • Recommends, coordinates, and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols and is responsible for new employee orientation to the workplace.
  • Educates other technologist on specialized tasks and new or modified procedures and policies.
  • Provides valuable and frequent insights and objective data regarding employee performance to the Supervisory DRT.
  • Assists in training and evaluating new employees.
  • Develops the image quality evaluation programs for Radiology Services under the direction of the Supervisory DRT.
  • Performs patient imaging examinations as assigned by the Supervisory DRT in one or more imaging modalities/methods such as Mammography, Ultrasound, MRI, Computerized Tomography, and Radiography-Fluoroscopy.
  • Assists with scheduling and patient preparation of OPC patient who are to have imaging performed elsewhere in the Orlando VA system.

Work Schedule: Fulltime, Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).

Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) duties performed independently. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.

Credentialing Standards. Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field.

Loss of Credential. An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain certification within two years, or who fails to maintain the required certification must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment.

Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-10 Grade Determinations:

Experience. Candidates must have at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the following clinical competencies:
  • Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
  • Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
  • Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
  • Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.
  • Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
  • Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work.
  • *Ability to resolve informal employee complaints.
  • *Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations.

Preferred Experience: 2 years of Magnetic Resonance Imaging experience

The full performance level of this vacancy is SG-10.

Physical Requirements: Must be in overall good health, able to sit at a desk working at a computer, engage in light to moderate physical activity including sitting, walking, bending and carrying supplies. Must be able to perform primarily light and sedentary duties with occasionally moderate physical demands with reasonable accommodation, if necessary, without endangering the health and safety of others. Position required walking throughout the clinical and /or Medical Center, standing for extended periods of time, and involves sitting at a computer and in counsel and consultation with Veterans and interdisciplinary teams.
