Duties
- Serves as Lead Firefighter directing the operation of one major piece of firefighting apparatus and an ambulance crew. Six to eight firefighters are under his/her leadership control at any time.
- Ensures that crewmembers keep equipment and emergency vehicles in good working order, that quarters are kept clean at all times, and that proper records are kept for his/her crew.
- Responds to fires as instructed and directs the crew to firefighting positions, placement of apparatus, and the adjustment of water pressure; and coordinates the operation of the emergency response team.
- Makes and/or directs fire-prevention inspections of buildings, shops, and other facilities in the area. Inspects and tests fire-extinguishing equipment and systems.
- As an Emergency Medical Technician, responds on site to accidents and other emergencies involving injuries and illnesses.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R (Identified as Critical Under the Drug Abuse Testing Program) and must pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
- Incumbent is subject to periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- Incumbent must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
- Incumbent must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- Incumbent must wear uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Incumbent is required to report for duty during Natural Disasters and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief. Employee must maintain a functioning telephone at residence to aid in contact during recall situations.
- The work requires the incumbent to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid state and government driver's license is required as well as Emergency Vehicle Operators certification.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Incumbent will be required to work a minimum of 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period), including at least one 24-hour shift per week and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.

Specialized Experience GS-8: One year of specialized experience which includes performing both structural and aircraft firefighting response including controlling and extinguishing fires and rescue operations and responding to accidents and other medical emergencies involving injuries and illnesses. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
