In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Performing emergency medical care and basic life support 2) Responding to hazardous materials incidents, and 3) Performing firefighting duties associated with buildings, shops, warehouses, and storage areas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Selective Placement Factors: This position has selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment. You must provide proof of certification in your application for the following required DoD Firefighter Certifications:
(1) Fire Officer I,
(2) Fire Inspector I,
(3) Fire Instructor I,
(4) Public Safety Telecommunicator I and II, AND
(5) Driver Operator Pumper and Aerial and Hazardous Materials Awareness, Operations and Technician.
You MUST submit a copy of your certification with your application package or you will be rated ineligible.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
FIREFIGHTER SECONDARY RETIREMENT COVERAGE: This position is covered as a secondary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c)(CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS) when it is filled by an individual who transfers directly from a primary or another secondary firefighting position with no break in service as a firefighter to this position.
