Summary

About the Position:

This position is located at Naval Medical Center, Defense Health Agency, Defense Health Network Pacific Rim, San Diego, CA Directorate of Clinical Support, Pharmacy. The incumbent works under the general supervision of the chief, pharmacy service and receives technical direction from the chief or the registered pharmacist in charge in the absence of the chief.

Duties

  • Serves as Lead Pharmacy Technician in the Pharmacy Service of the Medical Treatment Facility performing a variety of technical functions requiring application of an extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy practices.
  • Receives and reviews prescriptions for a full range of pharmaceuticals. This position leads a minimum of 3 or more employees on a regular and reoccurring bases.
  • Ensures the pharmacy's strategic plan, mission, and values are communicated to subordinate staff (team members) and integrated into strategies, goals, objectives, work plans and work products and services.
  • Uses knowledge and experience to recognize atypical occurrences when compounding, e.g., change in color or consistency, and reports problems to the pharmacist.
  • Uses medical supply inventory management system to reconcile needs and demands. Uses contractor owned automated supply system to order supplies.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records of work accomplishments and administrative information, as required, and coordinates the preparation, presentation and communications of work related information to supervisor.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • This position requires the completion of an Occupational Health pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 40lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Employees must be U.S. Citizens and provide proof of citizenship.
  • This position requires rotating shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) receiving and distributing prescription medication within the full scope of a pharmacy practice; 2) advising new and/or existing staff on proper pharmacy policies and procedures; and 3) packaging and labeling medications according to pharmacy standard operating procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR

One full year of graduate-level education in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutics, or Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related field of study, from an accredited college or university. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.) (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
