Duties

  • You will manufacture complex and non-routine parts and items of equipment from raw stock of different metals, metal alloys, and other materials.
  • You will work on one-of-a-kind work products that typically involve unusual trade problems and require a high degree of ingenuity and responsibility.
  • You will perform machining operations on computer numerical control CNC machine tools including shop floor programming and procedures such as multiple setups, in place machining of fixtures, and making or suggesting changes to machine tool programs.
  • You will make independent interpretation and translation of work orders, drawings, and specifications that are often lacking in such items as dimensions, tolerances, and types of fits and finishes.
  • You will plan sequences of operations that involve original innovations in setups, attachments, techniques, and tools.
  • You will make layouts; manufacture, assemble, modify special toss, broaches, hobs, jigs, fixtures; and molds required to increase efficiency in production on one of a kind aircraft repairs.
  • You will make initial set-up and operates all variety of machines used in tool making and aircraft parts manufacturing.
  • You will perform such finishing operations as hand stoning, scraping, lapping, reaming, tapping and filing to obtain proper fit of tooling and fixtures for final installation fit of parts on the aircraft to close tolerances.
  • You will develop new procedures or methods to resolve complex machining problems or manufacture tools and fixtures to accomplish operations more efficiently and economically.

  • This position may require travel to places within and outside the contiguous United States which could include remote or isolated sites. You may be required to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Manufacturing, repairing, and rebuilding aircraft parts and items of equipment from various metals and materials through initial planning, layout, complex set up of work, and operation of Computer Numeric Control (CNC)/conventional machines, complex machine tools and their various attachments, and precision handwork.

Additional Information:

Incumbent of this position must be physically and mentally able and willing to travel on short notice to whatever location is required. Personnel are required to remain at the assigned location until properly relieved by responsible authority, even if hostile conditions are encountered. A normal tour is 90 days. Irregular and extended shifts may be required. ISR team personnel working in remote areas may be required to work long hours under arduous and hostile conditions. The following describes requirements:

1. Must be physically and mentally able to pass Navy Occupational Safety and Health (NAVOSH) and Chemical Biological Warfare (CBR) requirements and maintain personal grooming required in order to wear safety and emergency equipment during all hours of work.

2. May be required to fly in U.S. Navy aircraft to and from aircraft carriers. This may require arrestment recovery and catapult launching from the carrier deck. In addition must be physically capable of exiting through small overhead escape hatches, wearing full emergency survival equipment, in the event of a crash landing or ditching at sea.

3. Must be physically able to transfer between ships by helicopter or surface craft. Transferring by helicopter may require lowering individual to the deck by aircraft hoist. Transferring by surface craft requires descending and climbing rope ladders at shipside in tossing seas. Subject to pitching and rolling decks, this could result in motion sickness in some individuals.

4. May be required to perform Aircraft Battle Damage Repair (ABDR) on aircraft deployed at forward land bases under hostile conditions.

5. When deployed aboard Naval ships, incumbent must be physically capable of reacting to constant ship alerts or drills. In the event of an emergency, must be physically capable of escaping explosion or fire, and must be capable of abandoning ship, if directed, by climbing or jumping into life rafts, climbing down ship's ladders, or jumping.

6. May encounter extremely hot, cold, and/or humid conditions in shipboard or remote locations.

7. Subject to pitching and rolling decks, which could result in motion sickness in some individuals.

8. May be assigned to small, confined shipboard working and living spaces.

9. May be subjected to aircraft carrier operation noise and movements 24 hours a day.

10. May be required to bend, stoop and twist to enter small openings.

11. May work for long periods in confined spaces, such as fuel cells.

12. Shall be required to use Government designated quarters when available in accordance with applicable regulations, during TAD/TDY and transit. Quarters in an overseas environment and aboard ship are usually small and may be shared by other military and civilian personnel.

13. The location of depot facilities and ISR assets are widely dispersed in the OCONUS area. The incumbent will be required to perform ISR responsibilities on deployed OCONUS aircraft both shipboard and in the field. In order to deploy, the incumbent will be required to meet the medical standards imposed by the Combatant Commander (COCOM) and/or DoD Instruction applicable to the mission area in which they deploy.

Additional information
