Duties

This position is located within TASMG Projects and may be extended or terminated at the discretion of the TASMG Commander.

JOB SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to support the AVCRAD maintenance activities ensuring aircraft of the region are ready and available to support Federal and State missions. In addition, the AVCRAD performs National Maintenance Program (NMP) repair of rotary wing aircraft and components, limited depot airframe repair, aircraft painting, major airframe repair, depot-level component repair, and component repair and management, as directed by Army Materiel Command (AMC), and prioritized by the National Guard Bureau (NGB).

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. This is an excepted position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the Connecticut Army National Guard.

The major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs a variety of machine operations to manufacture, modify, and repair aircraft parts, support equipment, tools, and assemblies. Fabricates local manufactured items required for aircraft components.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills, bench, plain, or universal milling machines, shapers, planers, internal and external grinders, jig borers, jig grinders, and radial drills.
  • Plans and lays out work.
  • Conducts training for lower graded machinists, and traditional drilling service members assigned to the shop.
  • Fabricates local manufactured items required for aircraft components.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside in areas that are usually noisy and dirty, and where there is a constant danger to the skin and eyes from flying metal chips and abrasive particles; skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds; danger to fingers, hands, and other parts of the body from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating pieces, and moving parts of machines.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires standing, stooping, bending, and reaching. Grade 8 operators frequently handle, lift, and carry objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). They are sometimes required to lift and move items weighing in excess of 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with a basic knowledge of machining processes. Must have the ability to use drill presses, shapers, planers and other types of associated machine tools.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Your resume and any other supporting documentation you wish to provide must clearly substantiate you currently possess 18 months of specialized experience in the following:

  • Experience or training performing the full range of machining operations on most types of conventional or CNC machine tools and their various attachments.
  • Experience or training in planning and lay out work from blueprints, worksheets and other drawings that may have missing or incorrect information.
  • Experience in applying shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions, such as those required for chasing threads or machining angular surfaces; locating and marking surfaces and angles to be machined.
  • Experience in programming machining operations, setting up and operating CNC machine tools.
  • Experience demonstrating knowledge of and ability to apply advanced shop mathematics such as geometric and trigonometric formulas to make computation for laying out work, machining pieces at unusual or compound angles, determining gear ratios pitch, angles and other similar exact or precision dimension.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of and skill in using any of the accepted trade methods and techniques, and any of the conventional types and/or computer numerical controlled (CNC) machine tools.
  • Skill and ingenuity in using conventional machine tools and their attachments to perform machining processes requiring special adaptation of the equipment or processes for which they were not specifically designed.
  • Knowledge of advanced shop mathematics, with skill in using geometric and trigonometric formulas to compute compound angles, angular indexing, hole patterns, pitch lead, and pitch diameters for various standard and non-standard threads.
  • Skill in setting up machines to machine unusual or compound angles.
  • Knowledge of the effect and relationship of heat-treating, annealing, plating, welding, and other related work processes on various machining operations in completing an assignment.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of the machining operation as well as extensive knowledge of related trades in order to resolve problems concerning complex machining operations or procedures and to suggest more efficient or economic machining processes where necessary.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of welding operations, shop operations, equipment capability, metals/alloys (aluminum, titanium, thorium magnesium and other metals), measurement tools, and instruments.
  • Knowledge of related trades in order to resolve problems concerning problems of complex machining operations is required.

COMPATIBLE MILITARY ASSIGNMENT: All applications will be considered regardless of Branch/AOC/FA/MOS. Incumbent will be required to be assigned to compatible military position within 1 year of selection. The selected individual may be required to attend formal technician school training.

UNIT OF ASSIGNMENT: Any aviation unit within state

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This position is covered by the medical monitoring program. Individual selected must undergo a preemployment physical examination prior to appointment. This position requires a security clearance (secret) which the applicant must possess or be able to obtain a clearance within one year of appointment. For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver's license for the state in which they live or are principally employed.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Training at the National Guard Professional Education Center (NGPEC) is a mandatory condition of employment, subject to availability of resources. NGB prescribed courses at NGPEC must be completed within 6 months of assignment to this position. Failure to complete course(s) may result in reassignment or termination of full-time employment unless extenuating circumstances preclude course attendance.

Primary Change of Station (PCS) relocation expenses will NOT be paid.
