Summary

THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION.

This National Guard position is for a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC, Position Description Number R9560WID and is part of the ID OCTC, National Guard.

THIS POSITION IS INDEFINITE-MAY CONVERT TO A PERMANENT STATUS WITHOUT FURTHER COMPETITION IF POSITION BECOMES AVAILABLE

Duties

1. Performs organizational, depot, direct, general support level field/shop maintenance, installs, maintains, repairs, modifies, troubleshoots, and overhauls a variety of electronic targets and electronic equipment related to range maintenance, including Army issue and commercial target training devices such as very high frequency transmitters and receivers, components of the Portable Infantry Target Systems (PITS), Stationary Infantry Target Systems (SITS), Stationary Armor Target Systems (SATS), Moving Infantry Target Systems (MITS), Moving Armor Target Systems (MATS), Infantry Mechanism (M34), Battel Effect Simulators (BES), Infantry mechanism, Remote Target System (RETS), target interface unit, small arms noise-flash simulators, battery charging systems, public address sound equipment, intercom equipment, and other related electronic equipment of similar complexity. Troubleshoots and diagnoses malfunctions. Disassembles, repairs or replaces defective components or assemblies. Reassembles, aligns, adjusts, and tests repaired devices to ensure proper operation by use of a wide range of test equipment. Retests items after repairs and modifications. Designs and fabricates unique training targets and devices not Army issued. Instruct customers in the proper use of radio remote control target systems, simulators, and all electronic equipment. Provides technical advice and assistance to lower graded employees in the performance of assigned duties.

2. Inspects, tests, service, adjust, align, calibrate, install, repair, replace, recondition, troubleshoot, field test and/or shop test target mechanisms and hit sensor devices. Uses shop bench test mock-up to test hydraulic and electrical/electronic target systems. Replaces/repairs defective hardware and parts such as: relays, switches, assemblies, cables, target elevating mechanisms, hydraulic cylinders, piping, valves, pumps, junction boxes, solenoids, electric motors, rectifiers, diodes, transformers, transistors, resistors, capacitors, thermal panels and other components.

3. Installs, inspects, services, repairs, and tests a variety of moderately complex data communications systems and equipment as required: SINGARS radio systems, Motorola base stations and target communications systems consisting of fiber optic, hard wired and WIFI, router and modem communication systems and related antennae systems. Thermal camera systems, Power amplifiers, microphones, loudspeakers.

4. Operate computer keyboard console to write training and qualification scenarios to TC, FM and other source standards. To activate target mechanisms and to perform maintenance. Operate two-way radio equipped four-wheel motor vehicles up and including 2 l/2-ton trucks to transport self, materials, and others to worksites. Performs operational checks on vehicles, fills out logbooks as required.

5. Fabricates using accepted trade methods and a variety of manual welding processes, performs welding duties using electric and wire feed, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes to weld various types of meTal in various sizes, shapes, and thickness, including dissimilar metals. Welding work processes include preheating, bead welding, flame cutting, plasma cutting, and maintaining temperature to prevent distortion; selection of type rod and size of tip to accomplish weld; determining heat necessary; setting up and adjusting equipment; maintaining proper speed, flame, motion, tip angle, and position to produce desired results. Performs routine flatwork welding repairs to metal mechanical target mounting devices.

6. Loads and unloads explosive BES systems. Following standard measurements and specifications, fabricates and repairs plastic, metal, wooden and cardboard targets.

7. Fabricates target coffins, fighting positions, target protection, target frames, target frame holders, limit markers, flag poles, ammunition tables, target silhouettes, and miscellaneous range related equipment. Measures and cuts material to support fabrication. Assembles and prefabricates parts for roughly constructed shelves, benches, and bins. Makes repairs on buildings and structures. Replaces broken or damaged hardware. Repairs or replaces loose, warped, cracked, or broken boards, steps, and window frames. Repairs or replaces wall and ceiling materials such as sheetrock and paneling.

8. Paints sheds, flagpoles, rubbish cans, ammunition tables, small signs, barricades, lane markers, and other similar structures and items used on ranges. Stencils identification names, numbers and letters used on range signs, range property and supplies where no artistic ability is required. Digs holes for signposts, lane markers and flagpoles.

9. Operates a variety of grounds maintenance equipment such as power lawn mowers, edger's, trimmers, chainsaws, weed whackers, etc. Performs work on various sites including small arms ranges.

10. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
  • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
  • Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:

Experience or training that has provided the knowledge of trade practices, tools, and related equipment used in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related fixtures and utilities.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Must have broad knowledge of electronic, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic shop and trade practices in repairing target holding mechanisms. Knowledgeable in target electromechanical, power distribution, and signal control devices. Skilled in reading electronic, electrical schematics and diagrams. Skilled in the use of soldering iron, radial arm and electrical hand saws, hand drill and general electrical and mechanical hand tools in providing repair and parts replacement. Skilled in the use of multi-meters, pressure gages, regulated power supply, and transistor tester in effecting serviceability test and repairs. Skill to use oxygen-acetylene welder for flatwork cutting and welding. Must be able to read technical manuals, schematic diagrams, and similar guides, operation and maintenance of target systems and testing techniques. Knowledge of the range layout and locations of target devices. Knowledge of safety practices related to electrical repair work, target devices, hostile fire, and range safety practices, and standard operating procedures. Knowledge of all operator, organizational, direct support, and general support maintenance manuals of remote target system and all governing directives. Knowledge of and skill to operate the computer console and related equipment in order to enter appropriate commands to operate target devices. Skill to operate a motor vehicle and a two-way radio. Must obtain a military vehicle operator's license.
