Duties

  • Selects, adapts, or modifies teaching methods or materials that experience indicates will be most effective in teaching the assigned grade level(s) and subject matter.
  • Encourage students to develop skills in research, making maximum use of available/approved education summative assessment results that inform practice.
  • Supports, counsels, and motivates students to meet or exceed grade-level standards.
  • Collaborate with special education educators to meet the individualized learning requirements of each identified student.
  • Participate in committee activities, as required to review, evaluate, and develop educational materials to improve the educational program.

Qualifications

State or Territory Certification/License. A valid fully professional state teaching license in content areas or the state's equivalent (as DoDEA determines comparable to DoDEA's teacher categories) will be accepted as fulfilling all qualifications for professional teaching education and certification in content areas. To receive full reciprocity the license must be unencumbered, which means a license that is not revoked, suspended, or made probationary or conditional by the state licensing board of education. The Praxis I and II or seven years of teaching at the Prek-12 level can be substituted in lieu of an unencumbered license and will require all minimum education requirements, a student teaching/internship and full qualification standards must all be met. Applicant's claiming military spouse preference under the MSLRA will receive consideration for an encumbered license.

Minimum Academic Preparation and Requirements. A baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association is required. Academic preparation of at least 40 semester hours (SH) in general education course work distributed over such fields as English, history, social studies, mathematics, fine arts, languages, science, philosophy, and psychology is required. In addition, a minimum of 18 SH of professional teacher education course work in such areas as learning process, tests and measurement, educational philosophy, psychology, social foundations, methods of teaching and curriculum applicable to the type and level of the position for which applying is required. (Note: Speech Language Pathologists, Social Workers, School Nurses, School Psychologists, JROTC Instructors, and non-certified Training Instructors are excluded from the minimum academic preparation requirement).

Requirements for 0310 Teacher, English: A minimum of 24 semester hours in English/Language Arts is required. Course work must include a course in each English literature, American literature, composition (writing process). A minimum of 12 semester hours of upper level coursework in English is required.

Requirements for 0320 Teacher, Social Studies: A minimum of 24 semester hours in social studies. Course work must include at least one course each in U.S. history, world history, political science, and geography. A minimum of 12 upper-level semester hours in social studies is required.

Requirements for 0352 Teacher, Humanities: Must be fully qualified in any Fine Arts, with an additional 9 semester hours of course work in English or social studies. OR Must be fully qualified in English or social studies, with an additional 9 semester hours of fine arts.

Requirements for 0405 Secondary Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID): Must have completed AVID Implementation Training sponsored by either an AVID Center or DoDEA. Verification that the training has been completed must be provided; this may be a copy of the AVID certificate, 1 semester hour of graduate credit or documentation which verifies that the applicant has attended the minimum 2- or 3-day training session. A second teaching category is required.


You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Education

Credits or degrees earned from a foreign college or university must be evaluated prior to acceptance. Three evaluation procedures are acceptable:

  1. the work must be evaluated and interpreted by a current member of National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). This website provides a list of current organizations who can perform your evaluation. You must select and work directly with one of these organizations.
  2. the foreign institution that awarded the degree is on a list endorsed by a regionally accredited university or on a list endorsed by a state department of education for the purpose of teacher certification in that state (this procedure will require an English translation of the transcript and a copy of the document awarding the degree, together with an authenticated list produced by an American university or a state department of education); and
  3. the work may be evaluated by the graduate division of a regionally accredited university and declared the equivalent of similar undergraduate or graduate work in a U.S. institution.

Graduates of non-accredited institutions may have their undergraduate work validated by admittance to graduate school and completion of a minimum of 5 SH of credit in a regionally accredited graduate college.

Additional information

  • Service members and civilian personnel will serve 24-month accompanied tours / 12-month unaccompanied tours.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens who are not considered Ordinarily Resident under the applicable Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). An ordinarily resident is anyone who has lived in the host country longer than the allowed number of days without being a member of the forces assigned, civilian component or a family member of either the aforementioned or who has obtained a work permit for any duration. Ordinarily Resident restrictions apply and vary depending on the host nation.
  • Pay retention may be offered to successful applicants for positions at overseas locations. For this provision to apply to employees already overseas, the selected individual would have to require a permanent change of station move and would have to be selected as a result of a recruitment effort that had been extended outside of the overseas command involved.
