Summary

This position is located at the CNRSW, Admiral Baker Golf Course Maintenance Division, Recreation Department, Naval Base San Diego. The Golf Maintenance Division is tasked with the responsibility of grooming the grounds of the golf course and maintaining related facilities.

Duties

  1. SUPERVISORY DUTIES 35%
  • Reviews work assignments and determines work priorities through the Superintendent
  • Assures that all personnel have been instructed in the safe operation of their equipment.
  • Directs the Maintenance Mechanic Leader to repair faulty or dangerous machinery and equipment.
  • Supervises, plans, schedules, and coordinates the activities of subordinate employees to include Greenskeepers, NA-05; Greenskeeper Leader NL-07; Irrigation Techs, NA-07; Pest Control Operator, NA-09; Mechanics, NA-10.
  • Trains employees in work methods and procedures.
  • Establishes performance and evaluates employees.
  1. GOLF COURSE RESPONSIBILITIES 65%
  • Assumes the responsibility of the security of the Maintenance Facility and all inventories.
  • Acts as the responsible party in the absence of the Golf Course Superintendent.
  • Assist in the planning of the daily work schedule and is responsible for its execution.
  • Ensure cleanliness of the golf course equipment, maintenance facility, and grounds.
  • Inspects the golf courses daily.
  • Initiates purchase requests for supplies.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and decision-making skills.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Conditions of employment

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background Investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • There will be slippery, wet surfaces and hazardous noise levels. The work will involve exposure to moderate discomfort, noises and vibrations, dust and grease, fumes, and extreme weather conditions.
  • The work will require the use of protective equipment.

Qualifications

  • Ability to exhibit basic supervisory skills, fully understand routine golf course maintenance operations and be familiar with the equipment involved.
  • Ability to supervise and direct the work of other employees, monitor performance, and ensure adequate internal control procedures are developed and operative.
  • Knowledge of and a basic understanding of the game of golf and its rules and how maintenance practices impact the sport.
  • Knowledge of turf irrigation practices and knows how to install and maintain irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of the complexities and interrelationships of soils, fertilizers, irrigation, drainage, insects, insecticides, turf diseases, fungicides, weeds, herbicides, tools, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of turf grass disorders and the ability to prescribe corrective actions.
  • Ability to apply pesticides and fertilizers, including all related calculations, calibrations and record keeping.
  • Skill in applying pesticides and fertilizers in accordance with the label.
The following is preferred:
  • Associate or Bachelor degree in turf management or related field or trades training and equivalent work related experience in turf management.
  • Thorough knowledge of general business administration practices and golf course operations practices and procedures as would be acquired through three to four years similar golf course maintenance experience in progressively responsible positions.
  • Working knowledge of golf course operations, turf management and practices necessary.
  • Prior supervisory experience required.
  • Experience applying pesticides and fertilizers in accordance with the label.
