Summary

This position is located in the Maintenance Division of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department in the Navy Region Southwest. The incumbent is responsible for the installation, modification, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and testing of new and existing electrical lines, circuits systems, fixtures, controls and equipment.

Duties

  • Determines and completes needed repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, lose connections and fittings, and damaged light fixtures. Rearranges and hooks up items such as outlets, switches, light fixtures, connections, regulators, and circuit breakers to installed systems.
  • Locates broken, worn, damaged, or poorly operating wiring, fixtures, controls and equipment through visual checks or variety of test equipment such as test lamps and ammeters.
  • Determines feasibility of work orders requesting changes or modifications to existing electrical circuits ensuring changes/modifications meet federal and state safety codes. Submits to supervisor schematic drawings of electrical modifications along with cost of materials and parts needed time frame to complete job with estimated cost of project.
  • Performs related maintenance skills in the repair and construction of MWR facilities as assigned. Picks up and delivers supplies and parts from off base vendors as needed.
  • Performs related or collateral duties as assigned.

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background Investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
  • Lifting and carrying supplies materials that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license to qualify for a government driver's license.
  • Incumbent must be able to pass physical exam and be able to be qualified in a CPR training course.

Qualifications

  • Must have the ability to plan, lay out, and complete the installation, modification, and repair of various systems, circuits, equipment and controls such as the routing, placement, balance, load, continuity, and proper safe operation of circuits and controls to the wiring system in the buildings, and lighting systems.
  • Must have skill needed to remove and replace fixtures and controls, tightening connections, wrapping exposed wiring with insulating tape, and soldering loose wire leads to contact points.
  • Must have knowledge of the various gauges, sizes and types of wire, conduit, couplings, fittings, relays, boxes, circuit breakers and other electrical devices, and the ability to arrange and install them to insure proper and safe operation.
  • Must have the ability to interpret and apply building plans, blueprint and wiring diagrams. Must have manual skill, dexterity, and a basic knowledge of electrical principles in completing repairs.
  • Have ability to identify materials, mechanisms, and components from knowledge of symbols, color codes, descriptions, schematics, and manufacturer's numbers.
  • Must have skill in the use of hand tools and a wide variety of test equipment, for example, wire cutters and strippers, drills, soldering irons, screwdrivers, test meters, test lamps, voltmeters, ammeters, watt meters, and ohmmeters. Must have good working knowledge of federal and state electrical codes.
