Summary

This position is located in the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department of the Commander, Navy Region, Southwest (CNRSW), Naval Base Coronado. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the proper maintenance and preparation of the athletic fields, outdoor courts, and the landscape/general appearance of the grounds of MWR Facilities located on the installation.

Duties

Responsible for the upkeep, cleanliness, and maintenance of all athletic playing surfaces such as baseball/softball fields basketball/tennis/volleyball courts, picnic areas and indoor sports complex to include wood basketball court, wood volleyball courts, sauna, pool and locker rooms. Supervises, trains, informs, and directs Motor Vehicle operators (Groundskeepers), Custodial worker, Custodial workers. Make recommendations for performance appraisals, awards, overtime and discipline/performance matters.

Operates and performs operation maintenance on all vehicles assigned to the athletic division. Operates motor vehicles to transport over government and public roads personnel and/or materials to work sites. Drives a TORO utility vehicle, 2-ton stack truck, half ton pickup truck, 12 passenger van used for carrying equipment and supplies, a screen drag for smoothing the infield areas of softball diamonds. operates a forklift for loading and unloading supplies, equipment and other items that are too heavy to lift by hand. Provides assistance to other departments when forklift is needed.

Responsible for inventory of equipment and stock supplies. Orders materials and supplies to maintain areas in best possible condition. Maintains and accounts for all equipment and tools, performs general and preventive maintenance on tools and equipment in efficient and safe operating condition. Maintains required records and reports.

Prepares all playing fields for regulation play to include but not limited to leveling infield playing service by dragging, hosing, raking, and adding soil as necessary, marking off playing field boundary lines and other lines as required, placing and/or replacing yard markers and goal post/net or fence. Operates gas and/or diesel-powered tractor, with aerator, fertilizer spreader and backhoe.

Cares and keep assigned areas clean, presentable, and as attractive as possible, depending on weather conditions. Mows grass areas, using power mower or hand mower. Removes debris, dead grass, and leaves. Operate sprinkler systems, apply fertilizers and hand water as necessary. Repairs and replaces sprinkler heads, fencing and netting as required. Operations a 72" riding mower and Toro utility vehicle. Picks up and hauls away debris, dead grass, and broken tree limbs.

Trims, prunes, and cut trees, bushes, and plants. Operates weed eaters, utility mowers, and several types of hand tools including wheelbarrow, sod edger, sod lifter, shovel, spade, rake, pick, pruners and water accessories such as hoses, nozzles and sprinkler systems.

Performs preventive maintenance on gas and diesel-powered machinery and other types of mechanical equipment used in the athletic department. Perform operational inspections on all athletic vehicles for loose parts, damaged or worn tires, proper oil level, battery conditions and similar items. Clean assigned vehicles and equipment as needed. Reports result of inspections to supervisor.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background Investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.

Qualifications

A high degree of skill is needed to maneuver driver operated machinery in small places, tight, confined spaces, in a small turning radius.

Knowledge of state, local and installation traffic laws.

Skill and knowledge to hook up and align multiple connections between tractor and attached equipment.

Skill in handling and controlling forklift loads when lifting and lowering loads at various heights

Knowledge to apply standard measurements and specifications to accomplish work.

A knowledge of HAZMAT requirements on handling of chemicals fertilizers, and other ground keeping and marking agents.
