Summary
This position is assigned to the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Support Branch; Fleet Readiness; Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC); Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. Incumbent provides lifeguard duties; is responsible for safeguarding the lives of persons at the assigned work area; assists with Aquatic training, education, and general support at the installation.
Duties
Level 1: NF-02 Lifeguard Trainee
This is an entry level position for those hires without current certifications. Once certification is complete, they may be non-competitively transferred to the next level. This level does not perform any lifeguarding duties until certified and must complete all such training within 30 days of hire.
Level 2: NF-02 Lifeguard
Responsible for safeguarding the lives of all patrons at the facility. Cautions patron regarding unsafe practices or conditions. Informs and educates patrons and staff regarding common aquatic risks and consequences. Employs preventative measures whenever possible to minimize risks. Rescues and/or assists swimmers in danger and administers emergency first aid until qualified medical assistance is present. Maintains order, enforces pool rules/regulations as appropriate. Provides reliable information regarding aquatic facilities, hours of operation and programs.
Advises patrons of unsafe conditions and gives appropriate instructions to avoid hazardous area. Reports any unsafe conditions concerning equipment, supplies, facility, pool or other areas to immediate supervisor and protects patrons and staff from same. Follows established guidelines for communication and emergency procedures including preparation of accident/incident reports when necessary.
Performs routine swimming pool chemical and temperature readings. Performs housekeeping duties such as scrubbing pool deck, sides and gutter, cleaning bathhouse, restrooms, shower stalls. locker room, office and classroom areas. When required, contacts PWC/Staff Civil Engineering (SCE) to have minor repairs made. Completes daily log for all tasks accomplished.
May open and close facility and/or prepare facility for scheduled activities. Performs other duties as assigned.
Level 3: NF-02 Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor (WSI)Responsible for instructing and teaching various swimming skills, styles and basic diving to various age groups. Maintains attendance rosters and prepares progress reports on participants enrolled in the class. Responsible for safeguarding patrons at the facility. Cautions participants regarding unsafe practices or conditions. Informs and educates patrons and staff regarding common aquatic risks and consequences. Employs preventative measures whenever possible to minimize risks. Rescues and assists swimmers in danger and administers first aid as required until more advanced assistance arrives. Maintains order, enforces pool rules/regulations as appropriate.
Monitors activity in pool and deck area to prevent accidents and stop boisterous play. Caution swimmers, takes charge in emergencies. Reports unsafe conditions concerning equipment, supplies, facility, pool or other areas to immediate supervisor and protect patrons and staff from same. Follows established guidelines for communication and emergency procedures including preparation of accident/incident reports when necessary.
Performs swimming pool temperature and chemical readings. Maintains daily log with the results of the testing. Notifies supervisor of problems with chemical levels and of need of pool supplies. Performs housekeeping duties to ensure proper standards of appearance, cleanliness and sanitation. This may include scrubbing the pool deck, sides and gutter, vacuuming pool, bathhouse, locker rooms, office and classroom cleaning. When appropriate, contacts PWC/SCE to have minor repairs made. Completes log for all tasks accomplished.
Performs opening and closing duties of facility and prepares facility for scheduled activities. Provides information regarding aquatic facilities, hours of operation and programs.
Attends all in-service training, NAVOSH classes and other training as instructed. Maintains all certifications in a current status.
Performs related tasks as assigned.

Note: When submitting transcripts for an Associate degree or higher, proof of a high school diploma or equivalent is not required. All transcripts MUST show student's name, the name of the awarding university or educational institution, degree type, awarded/conferred date, and the field of study (major). If your degree has not been awarded and/or you possess certificates of completion for DoD approved competency-based training courses, and/or a valid CDA/MSA credential(s), you MUST also provide a copy of your HS Diploma or equivalent. Altered transcripts will not be accepted.
Transcripts from foreign colleges must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency in order to be considered. Applicants are responsible to obtain and submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency which is a private U.S. organization. Credential evaluations are not free and applicants are responsible for the cost of the selected service.
