Job Description (Please follow all instructions carefully)

Summary

This position is located within the Navy Fitness Program, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Departments, within the San Diego Metro Sites. The purpose of this position is to serve as a facilities coordinator. Incumbent is assigned to the VADM Fitness Center located on Naval Air Station North Island, Coronado.

Duties

Assists with the operation of multiple fitness centers in accordance with COMNAVBASE MWR and host installation regulations and instructions. Issues workout charts, membership cards and other additional paperwork. Responsible for upkeep of records (financial transactions, daily activity reports, fire inspection sheets, cleaning duties sheets, group exercise class utilization, etc.).

Designs individualized exercise programs for patrons based on their goals and current fitness and health status. Screens participants for cardiovascular risk factors prior to prescribing exercise. Recommends means for modifying cardiovascular risk factors, weight loss and improving nutritional habits within guidelines recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and other professionally recognized organizations and institutions.

Teaches a variety of ongoing group exercise classes such as aerobics, STEP aerobics, muscular toning and circuit training. Designs, choreographs and continually modifies class format. Monitors all class participants for safety.

Instructs and demonstrates proper biomechanical technique for use of all strength training and cardiovascular exercise equipment. Demonstrates proper heart rate monitoring while exercising. Provides patrons with the knowledge of basic exercise physiology and kinesiology.

Performs required resale operation duties including sales, cash handling and daily inventory.

Develops educational material for patrons (flyers, bulletin boards, etc.). Designs and implements facility contests and incentive programs. Conducts fitness workshops/clinics and health/fitness screenings (body composition, blood pressure and cholesterol assessments).

Cleans fitness center equipment and exercise areas daily. Provides general routine maintenance on exercise equipment under the direction of the supervisor.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background Investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
  • The work requires standing, sitting, walking and lifting 50 pounds or more while performing duties.
  • Irregular working hours may be required to include early shift, late shift, evenings, weekends and holidays when the need arises.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid certification is required.
  • Certification from a nationally recognized agency in the area of exercise science or be able to obtain certification within 90 days of employment.

Qualifications

Practical knowledge and understanding of exercise science and exercise prescription.

Certification from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), American Council on Exercise (ACE), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research, or other nationally recognized certifying agency or be able to obtain certification within 30 days of employment.

Knowledge of basic cardiovascular risk factors, weight loss and nutritional habits, proper biomechanical techniques and fitness testing.

Knowledge and skill in the instruction and proper use of exercise equipment.

Ability to handle emergency situations.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certification.

Ability to maintain records and reports, follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively with others.

The IRC includes a check of the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP) records in the Alcohol and Drug Management Information Tracking System (ADMITS) database, a check of the Family Advocacy Program (FAP) records in the Fleet and Family Support Management Information System (FFSMIS), and an installation security/base check via the Navy Justice Information System (NJIS) database and/or other law enforcement systems. This information will be used to determine suitability for the applicant in accordance with criteria for automatic and presumptive disqualifiers, per DoDI 1402.05.

Per Department of Defense Instruction (DoDI) 1402.05. Background Checks on Individuals in DoD Child Care Services Programs, incumbents will be automatically disqualified for a conviction in either civilian or military court (to include any general, special, or summary court-martial conviction or if they received non-judicial punishment [under Article 15 or chapter 47 of Title 10, U.S.C]) for any of the following: a sexual offense, any criminal offense involving a child victim, or a felony drug offense. Additionally, the incumbent will be automatically disqualified if he/she has been held to be negligent in a civil adjudication or administrative proceeding concerning the death of or serious injury to a child or dependent person entrusted to the individual's care.

Non-U.S. citizens with fewer than three years of recent residential history in the U.S. may be determined ineligible for employment.

Some positions have special requirements. Selectee may be required to complete a one (1) year probationary period.
