Summary

The incumbent of this position is Maintenance Mechanic in the Building Mechanical Maintenance Unit in Engineering Service at the Dayton VA Medical Center (VAMC), Dayton Ohio. The Dayton VAMC is a complexity level 1 facility with approximately 63 buildings/structures and over 1.6 million square footage on 240+ acres and four geographically separated Community Based Outpatient Clinics.

Duties

MAJOR DUTIES

Incumbent works as a painter and coats surfaces using accepted methods of the painting trade including special finishing techniques such as marbling and graining, but using coating materials that are prepared in special as well as common ways, and by applying coating techniques that ensure surfaces have a smooth textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements. Incumbent determines the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited to the surface finish required. Surfaces are prepared using methods such as smoothing with pumice and rottenstone, filling, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins, and mixing and applying pre-coating agents. Incumbent prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing in various additives. Incumbent uses brushes, rollers, spray guns, and graining devices and ensures the coating finish meets match, texture, decorative, thickness and level requirements.

Must possess great knowledge of coating methods, techniques, devices, and materials, and how they are used to get a variety of finish results on various kinds of surfaces.

Incumbent works as a plumber installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers.

Incumbent must have a high degree of knowledge of the operation of various systems and equipment, and of how they are placed, slanted and sloped.

Incumbent utilizes carpentry skills to construct, install, repair, and modify wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.

Sets up and operates a wide variety of wood working machines and tools. They assemble items with a variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and use glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops.

He/she often works in portions of the utility systems requiring attention that are cramped, dirty and hard-to-reach locations. The work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 90 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to lift and carry items over 90 pounds.

Working Conditions: The incumbent will be required to work at high levels, such as ladders and roofs. Dusty conditions will be encountered at times while working with wood-cutting machinery in the shop area. Woodworking machinery can be dangerous and to avoid accidents,
safe working practices must be observed. Incumbent will encounter patients in all areas of the hospital. Frequently the incumbent works outdoors in all kinds of weather. Incumbent may work also work in combined areas such as crawl spaces or attics or work with tools for extended periods of time requiring incumbent to work in uncomfortable positions. Incumbent may use protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves.
