Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
- Primary Duties - Boiler
º Operates any one of the utility plant's three (3) boilers at a capacity of 33,000lbs of steam per hour.
¤ Responsible for monitoring the medical gas alarm panel, emergency call system & monitoring computer for Building #5.
- Complete annual physical.
- Attend training in support and technical advancement of the Maintenance Mechanic (Utility Systems Operator) position such as, but not limited to, forklift training, instrumentation troubleshooting/calibration, confined space, boiler operation training, etc.
- Completes and/or performs are duties as outlined in latest VHA Directive for BOILER AND BOILER PLANT OPERATIONS which include but are not limited to:
- Following safety procedures in the lighting off sequences and all boiler-testing procedures.
- Checking the operation of condensate liquor movers, associated pumps, chemical injection systems, and air-control systems.
- Performing hourly inspections of operating equipment and records diesel fuel tank levels using the Veeder Root system.
- Testing and maintaining proper chemistry control of boiler water, condensate, and cooling towers.
- Responsible for the operation of three 1250 ton and one 1100-ton centrifugal.
- Responsibility for maintaining an accurate and complete log of conditions and events during his/her tour, and the turnover of items requiring further attention to supervision.
- Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on all equipment associated with Utility Plant Operations.
- Inspecting, adjusting and repairing all boiler controls safety devices, instrumentation, flow meters, etc.
- Be able to inspect repairs and adjustments made by contractors, based on manufacture operating standards and guidelines.
- Performing minor repairs to equipment and operate in accordance with VA regulations and directives, ASME boiler and pressure vessel codes, ASHRAE standards, facility policies, and good engineering practice.
- Other Duties include:
- Instrumentation
- Works independently to troubleshoot, repair, modify, overhaul, test, calibrate and install a variety of multi-component industrial and precision instruments and equipment.
- Installs, repairs and calibrates analyzers for optimized operation of the Utility Plant to include conductivity, pH, TDS, ORP, etc.
- Troubleshoot and functionally test equipment to isolate defective components and perform repairs, adjusting and replacing parts as required.
- Repair machinery by replacing bent shafts and/or bearings, etc.
- Performs electrical testing of motors and other components checking continuity, ohms resistance, voltage and amperage using multimeters, meggers and continuity testers.
- Electrical
- Works alternating current (AC) electrical systems and circuits.
- Troubleshoots and repairs a single to three-phase electricity add-a-phase converters with transformers, rectifiers, capacitors, relays, contacts, starters, etc.
- Performs tests and diagnoses of single and three-phase motors and rheostats, timers, sensors, and ballasts.
- Completes routine maintenance, makes repairs, troubleshoots systems and individual components, makes replacements, and installs new systems, components, and equipment.
- Pipefitting
- Performs pipe fitting related duties which will include planning, layout, and routing of piping systems.
- Work on the installation and repair of different types of piping which include ductile iron, copper, galvanized steel, PVC, and cast iron as well as transition couplings and valves associated with these materials.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Various Shifts (Must be ready to work rotating shifts as required) Once fully qualified to work unsupervised within the boiler plant, selectee will be required to work swing shift (4:00 PM to 12:00 AM) or graveyard shift (12:00 AM to 8:00 AM), on a more permanent basis.
