The position is under the supervision of the Construction and Maintenance Supervisor and performs in-house construction and modifications of architectural and utility components of buildings, requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices associated with the following occupations: carpentry, painting, sheet metal worker, plumber, electrical worker, locksmith and telecommunications worker.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Drill metal and wood doors for hardware.
  • Fit and hang doors, roof hatches, patch roofs and/or roof flashing.
  • Perform simple concrete repairs.
  • Install ceiling tile and "T" bars and/or perform touch up painting.
  • Lay, repair, set ceramic and/or vinyl tile.
  • Repair plaster and stucco and/or mix the materials in accordance with standard practices.
  • Set up and operate a wide variety of wood working machines and/or tools.
  • Assemble items with a variety of joining techniques e.g., miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, mortise and tenon.
  • Utilize glues and/or adhesive to secure wood pieces, veneers and counter tops.
  • Utilize wood, metal, and various composite materials when installing or replacing interior partitions, flooring, panels, suspended ceilings, counter tops and/or moldings.
  • Interpret drawings, blueprints and specifications independently.
  • Determine the layout, work sequences and types of lumber or special related
  • materials.
  • Carry out a project from initial layout to completion.
  • Assist with minor duties in Masonry, Plastering, Roofing, Painting and Tile Setting.
  • Install and repair a variety of commercially manufactured locking devices, including combination locks which are typically installed i.e., security units as safes, vaults, cabinets and chests.
  • Set up coding systems involving varying types of locks and keyways.
  • Utilize arithmetic in setting up a coding system and selecting the correct size of pins.
  • Troubleshoot lockouts in mechanical security system to determine which components are malfunctioning.
  • Interpret technical manuals and specifications when testing and repairing locking mechanisms.
  • Fabricate parts when they are not available in the shops stock, reshapes parts by grinding and filing.
  • Solve problems that require decisions when modifying and reworking locking devices for special security objective.
  • Improvise and apply advanced neutralization techniques.
  • Preferred Experience: Extensive carpentry background to include door installation and cabinetry with locksmith certification.

Physical Requirements: Work requires considerable bending, kneeling, and stooping. If assignment is located at a job site, strenuous physical exertion may be required when handling heavy/bulky material such as sheets of plywood and other building/construction materials. Uses manual or portable power tools for extended periods of time in uncomfortable positions. Construction work will typically require climbing ladders, scaffolding, and rooftops. Must be able to lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds and with assistance may lift/move heavier items.
